Sadly a grade, unregisterable appy. Cute, but a shame.BaroqueAgain1 wrote:He's adorable...and looks to be nicely built. An Appaloosa with such a nice butt blanket deserves to be shown off. Maybe he'll grow up to be a pony horse at Keeneland or Churchill. The outriders there have shown they appreciate cute spotted horses.
Appaloosas are a distinct breed, not a colour. The different patterns in the breed can be found in others however. There are like three different registries for Appies some which are colour-based but generally they are not regarded at all as true Appaloosas and likely wouldn't be able to get papers to race for instance. They do accept different bloodlines (Appaloosa, Quarter Horse, Arabian, Thoroughbred) in the studbook for registry, but it is still its own breed.BaroqueAgain1 wrote:Why "unregisterable?" I was under the impression that Appaloosas are a color type, and not necessarily a single breed.![]()
I've seen horses with different breed backgrounds registered as Appaloosas.
I don't know enough about appy patterns to know which are dominant and which aren't, but if his dam is a paint, then yeah it precludes him. Doesn't really need to be registered though, as you say. Some of the best babysitters and riding horses are un-papered, grade horses.BaroqueAgain1 wrote:With his distinct blanket, I would guess that his sire was an Appaloosa, so he probably qualifies there. But if his dam's pinto markings disqualify him, then I guess he's not headed for the show ring or starting gates.![]()
I suspect that he's going to be a gelding anyway, if he's going to be "just be a riding horse or babysitter for yearlings."
