Brand new filly for #FoalFriday. She's an Uncle Mo out of Champagne Royale, a 1/2 sis to G1 wnrs Majestic Harbor and Danza. @coolmoreamerica

Not a Thoroughbred, but this is Jenny and her colt, born a day or two ago. Jenny was Gunnevera's nurse mare and is currently located at Brandywine Farm.

Jenny will return to her owner soon in case she's needed as a nurse mare again (she was only at the farm to do a news story for the Derby, but ended up foaling there), but the people at Brandywine fell so in love with the foal that they have decided to adopt him. Once he's weaned, he'll return to Brandywine to live on the farm and probably just be a riding horse or babysitter for yearlings--whatever they decide he'll be best at. He's soooooooooo cute!

He's adorable...and looks to be nicely built. An Appaloosa with such a nice butt blanket deserves to be shown off. Maybe he'll grow up to be a pony horse at Keeneland or Churchill. The outriders there have shown they appreciate cute spotted horses.

Jenny is beautiful and her colt is so adorable. Really pretty, both of them. Thanks for sharing the photos. The one where he has mom's tail on his face is hilarious.

Sadly a grade, unregisterable appy. Cute, but a shame.

Why "unregisterable?" I was under the impression that Appaloosas are a color type, and not necessarily a single breed.

I've seen horses with different breed backgrounds registered as Appaloosas.

Appaloosas are a distinct breed, not a colour. The different patterns in the breed can be found in others however. There are like three different registries for Appies some which are colour-based but generally they are not regarded at all as true Appaloosas and likely wouldn't be able to get papers to race for instance. They do accept different bloodlines (Appaloosa, Quarter Horse, Arabian, Thoroughbred) in the studbook for registry, but it is still its own breed.

In this case his dam is the reason.
"All ApHC-registered Appaloosas must be the offspring of two registered Appaloosa parents or a registered Appaloosa and a horse from an approved breed registry, which includes Arabian horses, Quarter Horses, and Thoroughbreds. In all cases, one parent must always be a regular registered Appaloosa. The only exception to the bloodline requirements is in the case of Appaloosa-colored geldings or spayed mares with unknown pedigrees; owners may apply for "hardship registration" for these non-breeding horses. The ApHC does not accept horses with draft, pony, Pinto, or Paint breeding [...]"
He could get exception if he's gelded I suppose.

With his distinct blanket, I would guess that his sire was an Appaloosa, so he probably qualifies there. But if his dam's pinto markings disqualify him, then I guess he's not headed for the show ring or starting gates.

I suspect that he's going to be a gelding anyway, if he's going to be "just be a riding horse or babysitter for yearlings."

I don't know enough about appy patterns to know which are dominant and which aren't, but if his dam is a paint, then yeah it precludes him. Doesn't really need to be registered though, as you say. Some of the best babysitters and riding horses are un-papered, grade horses.
