Oh my oh my... Feb 7, 2017 parade of stallions at Shadai Stallion Station. All the big boys & some newbies - Deep Impact, Harbinger, Maurice, Rulership, Just a Way, Orfevre, King Kamehameha, Duramente... hubba hubba.

@lurkey mclurker, thank you so much for posting that link to the Shadai stallion parade. I haven't had time yet to watch all the videos, but will later today. My overall impression is that the stallions are mostly all compact and not as big as the size trend here in the U.S. I like that.
Duramente is a fiery guy, isn't he. Just so full of himself and a handful to manage, but the gentleman who showed him remained totally calm.
Deep Impact is greatness wrapped in a fairly plain package, but I was marveling that he is in such wonderful shape. None of those stallions were fat like too many we see here.
From sheer beauty, Orfevre and Maurice are stunning.

Never fails to amaze me just how good their stallions look. Nary a one is thick and cresty like almost every US stallion you look at, even older sires who've been at stud for years.

LOL you are all welcome but I mostly stumbled onto it when I was stalking @nabecci's Twitter feed and was initially distracted by the gorgeous Desperado (JPN)

a MGSW son of Neo Universe standing at Arrow Stud.
There's also a lovely pic today of a sleepy Eishin Flash (one of my racing favorites) - I think his first crop might be two-year-olds this year?

ETA: The JRA has also updated their English page/index of stallions in Japan - pedigrees, race records, walking videos.

Apparently Chrome has started covering his book of mares already today. Hope no one drops early next Jan

Come now......you know what I mean.
With sheds seeming to open a bit earlier all the time it's got to increase the number of oops early foals who actually drop in late December. We all know mares make their own schedules to an extent..... I guess you'd call it a calculated risk starting to cover mares on the 11th (or earlier..).

They used to police it. The JC would send inspectors to random farms at the end of December. They had a list of the mares who were supposed to be at each farm and they would inspect them to see if they were still in foal. I don't know whether they're still doing that.Katewerk wrote:I always wondered how they policed that...Life At Zen wrote: Even if it happens.. those foals will all have a birthdate of January 1st... lol

Probably not worth their time.
Does anyone actually think an inspector would wander out to say, Coolmore (last December) or Taylor Made this year and actually report if they found a December 27th California Chrome foal on the ground? Resulting in his first foal crop being a foal of one.....
Chances would be better of having another Triple Crown winner this year I'd think.

Actually there was a sire in the Keeneland January sale (I can't remember which one) whose description said that his oldest offspring were yearlings aside from one foal that had been born in late December the previous year.
Edited to Add: I just looked it up. It was actually the FT February sale and I was off by a year.
The stallion was Declaration of War. The description says "His first foals are 2 year olds of 2017. (He is the sire of a premature foal born in December 2014.)"
By the way, that's a Coolmore stallion.

Colour me impressed than the actually noted and reported one!
I really an surprised.
So, begs the question.....will DOC be tagged for that and essentially not make the 1st/2nd/3rd crop sires list?
