Helsinge, dam of Black Caviar, has passed away (reports on Twitter and some Australian sites so far). Not sure what happened, but she was only 15 :(

Is that a photo of Helsinge and Black Caviar as a foal? The two look virtually identical. Sad to lose such a fine mare at only 15.

Such a sad thing to happen. So sorry for her connections.
Black Caviar's dam Helsinge dies at 15
Australian media reported her death was caused by an adverse reaction to medication.

Babies are great, but the old girls are the best. Retired mares Sheila Purple and Serena's Song out enjoying the January sunshine today. Those of you who know Serena will recognize her famous attitude!

Is that a cribbing strap around her neck, or just a little something to let her handlers get a hand on her, since she doesn't seem to be wearing a halter?

Lol, I <3 Serena's Song! That expression in the middle pic, vintage Serena. Funny how in the pasture it makes a horse look grumpy, but in a race it looks focused and intense :D .

It looks like it has a nameplate on it, it seems to be one of those 'ID' straps. Too narrow/thin to be cribbing strap.

Yes it's a neck strap, and since she just has the neck strap on then I'm guessing she's easy to catch in the field. She probably just has the neck strap on for identity purposes and also something for them to grab onto in case they need to bring her inside or give meds.

The pinned ears on Serena are a hoot. I've never seen her that hairy. It's always been late spring/summer when I've visited her. And, despite her age, she always sheds out nicely. She still knows her own importance, that's for sure. In case anyone doesn't know, Sheila Purple is the dam of Pico Central.

Rough night. Pontchatrain died trying to deliver her foal. Foal didn't survive either. Pontchatrain was an absolutely brilliant filly, the only horse in Glen Hill Farm history to win four consecutive stakes races, starting with the Unzip Me, then the G3 Senator Ken Maddy, then the G2 Monrovia, and finally the G2 Buena Vista. She was a sweet horse to be around as well.
from Glen Hill Farms' FB page. not the news anyone likes waking up to.

From the Bloodhorse article:
Bernick said Pontchatrain was first bred to Galileo (IRE) during last year's breeding season but aborted the foal about a month before her due date. For this breeding season, she was bred to Curlin and carried the foal to term but hemorrhaged after her water broke Saturday.
