I feel like there was another big name stallion that went private at some point because they took a huge dip in fee the following year. Smarty Jones maybe? Or maybe it was Forestry on the heels of him not being the sire people thought he'd be. It was something along those lines, though.

Good point. Although someone mentioned it may simply mean that the price depends on the mare. Since they likely want to keep attracting a high quality book of mares (and in a sense that is what they were doing with the 2 for 1 deal, since the second mare had to be a graded stakes winner or producer) they might offer a much discounted price to good mares, and may even have an approved book. Seeing as Pharoah did more than fill his book 208 mares covered, making him the third largest book in North America using that tactic, and in the process getting himself the highest quality book of any NA stallion, I'm guessing they figured that's what they'll go with again.

Probably not who you're thinking of but Coolmore did that with Fastnet Rock in Europe. He wasn't super high (30,000 euros) but didn't get a ton of mares so they made him private, gave him a year off of shuttling and he was private again when he returned.

Yeah, you're thinking of Smarty Jones. He stood his 2005-2008 for $100,000, went private for 2009, then stood for an advertised fee of $10,000 in 2010

I had seen conflicting spellings (or maybe my francophone brain refused to process the word 'remarque' beside 'risque' without the accent)

Would love to see the Americian's light the world on fire. If I had a mare, would send to him or Musketier- love both of them.

Even as a turf horse, that's lower than I thought they'd put him. I figured around $30k or so.

Yeah, seems like a bargain to me. I wish him well. I've always loved turf racing but, for his sake, I hope he throws dirt runners too.
