Big Brown’s new beginning - and he’s absolutely thriving on it
Just as a bird takes to wing, he is suddenly in the air, all rippling muscles and streaming black mane against blue sky. Neck arched, ears upright, front legs extended toward the heavens, he is a breathtaking vision of power and grace, his bay body bronzed by gentle morning light.

And then, with the same quick yet effortless movement, he returns to ground, eyes afire with a mischievous kind of delight.

Now 11, Big Brown clearly has lost none of the energy that propelled him through a magical yet ultimately star-crossed Triple Crown campaign in 2008. From the time he emerges from his stall at Dutchess Views Farm in Pine Plains, New York, he radiates vitality and that electric, yet indefinable quality that stokes the hearts of champions.

The late Monsun's son Almandin (GER) just won the Melbourne Cup over Heartbreak City with Hartnell third. Incredible stretch duel between the top two. Almandin joins Protectionist and Fiorente as Melbourne Cup winners sired by Monsun.

Always had a soft spot for Big Brown. Such a lovely horse with so much talent. What a force he could have been at 4 or 5 if his feet would have held together.

Calumet Farm website has been updated with their 2017 stallion list (no prices yet):

New: Big Blue Kitten, Slumber & Optimizer
Returning: English Channel, Oxbow, Americain, Red Rocks, Smarty Jones, Aikenite, Grey Swallow, Musketier, Point Given, Raison d'Etat,
Ready's Image, Real Solution, Eye of the Leopard, Snapy Halo.
Regional: Hightail (Arkansas), Lentenor (Indiana), Vertiformer (Ohio)

Brad Kelley is doing it his own way, strong turf orientation, and an indifference to pandering to a dysfunctional marketplace.
I wish him success. Lots of old favorites in that stallion line-up. And the website has a much better presentation this year.

Man, I love Slumber. Would love to see his official conformation shot, didn't see one on the site yet.

I loved Big Brown. When it came to the horse, the connections didn't matter to me...he was a beautiful horse with tons of talent.
I do wonder if he could have had a longer career if they had kept him on grass. The one turf stakes I watched him win (Monmouth Stakes? Monmouth Cup? Can't remember  ), I don't think I've ever seen a horse run so happy (including Runhappy himself :P ). He just bounded away in the stretch, springing over that grass like a freaking pronking antelope.

There's a pending export on file for him. We were there in July and saw a quarantine stall set up, I didn't want to barge over and read the fine print on the sign hanging on the roped off area, but I could see "export" on it. At the time, I couldn't figure out who was missing from the stalls/paddocks and forgot all about it until now.

Does that make American Gal a price play in the Juv Fillies? "Sire recently sent to XYZ" is a betting strategy, right? :)

That's a surprise - I assumed he'd be headed to Juddmonte. What did I miss?

Looks like he was for sale (at least partially) and Hill N Dale along with China Horse Club have bought in. Juddmonte will also stay in and support him.

That is a huge score for American breeding. While I understand that his pedigree and race record are strictly turf, he's such a beautifully-made and fast horse, that he might attract a few dirt mares along with all the grass girls that should be coming his way.

I tried to True Nicks him with Zenyatta but the report won't load :(

Not that she'd ever go to an unproven stallion...
Once upon a time there was a horse named Kelso.

It's also a win for the growing Turf racing thise side of the pond. I think it's a win all around :)
