She's a late foal, but she sure is an adorable one. :D Both mom and filly are sooo pretty.

Is Catalina also pensioned? She looks like a horse who is ready for a lazy retirement.

Maybe.
But I don't know yet about her current status.

Catalina's breeding record after A Shin Hikari in 2011;

2012: barren to South Vigorous
2013: filly by Deep Impact (named A Shin Twinkle -- winner, looks like highly-talented but sidelined due to injury now)
2014: not covered
2015: barren to Deep Impact
2016: barren to Deep Brillante

It must be rare, but there may still be some elite mares that are covered at her age.

Darara(GB) 1983M, great racer as well as broodmare, produced Dar Re Mi(GB) at 22 and Rewilding(GB) at 24!!!

Excellent article written by Maggie Kimmitt, with lovely photos by a former TBC poster.

Pensioners on Parade - La Ville Rouge
It’s an oft-repeated scene. A caring, responsible breeder/owner walks into a field and points out a cherished, pensioned broodmare. She tells of how much the horse has meant to her family and her entire operation. These are the good stories; the happy endings.

This particular case, however, is just a bit special. The owner is Gretchen Jackson of Lael Stables, and the mare is La Ville Rouge, dam of Barbaro.

“Come on, Ville Rouge. . . come on.”

Jackson leads the way and points to the bay mare grazing farthest away. The rest pick up their heads, intrigued by approaching visitors. Initially, La Ville Rouge keeps to the task at hand, disinterested.

Thanks for sharing that. Lovely article from the author and photos from Gin. ;)

I am sorry that the Jacksons never got that filly they were hoping for though.

Let's Elope, the Kiwi-bred Champion mare and winner of the 1991 Melbourne Cup, has passed away from natural causes.

Chris and Kathie Bakker from Lauriston Park in Euroa, Victoria, said Let's Elope died peacefully in her sleep lying underneath a gum tree in her favourite paddock.
I am sorry to hear of her passing, it is sad but it sounds like a lovely, gentle way to go. She had a good long life, RIP old girl.

America still misses her, but this wondermare is much loved in her new homeland too
On a warm Kentucky autumn afternoon in November 2009, a chestnut mare followed a handler into the sale pavilion at Keeneland, retracing the steps countless others had trod before her on the same path that thousands more would follow in time.

This mare was exceptional, an extraordinary freak of the breed. Only a very few of her gender around the world had run with the power she displayed during her racing career, and there was a tense air of anticipation hovering over her appearance in the ring.

She tossed her head and spun around, glaring at the spectators gathered in the seats before her, seemingly displeased with the indignity. After all, she had been led in here just 10 months before and then dispatched without meeting her reserve price.

Announcer Kurt Becker reminded the buzzing crowd she had won 11 Grade 1 races and earned over $4 million while collecting four Eclipse Awards, including the gold statuette as 2002 Horse of the Year.

This was none other than Azeri, a national American racing treasure, a potential crowning jewel for any breeder’s collection of precious female Thoroughbred gems.

Reluctance in the marketplace

Thanks for posting the article. It sounds like Azeri wants for nothing. I wonder if they will continue to breed her to Deep Impact until she is pensioned; I myself would like to see her visit some other Japanese stallions.

I love King Kamehameha but since I learned he has that genital disease, I really don't want any mares going to him, let alone Azeri.

Victory Party, Half Sister To Beholder And Into Mischief, Returning To U.S.
Team Valor International is repatriating Victory Party, a half sister to champion Beholder, sire Into Mischief and the recent $3-million Keeneland September sale topper, to the U.S. from Australia.

The 10-year-old Yankee Victor mare delivered her third straight Animal Kingdom filly at Arrowfield Stud on September 20. She will be shipped to Kentucky on October 22 without being covered in the current Southern Hemisphere season. She will be bred on Northern Hemisphere time, with a mate yet to be selected.

She's not quite a broodmare yet... but who would you like to see Beholder go to? Who do you think she is likely to go to?
