I am curious. How is Spendthrift doing with their non-commercial stallions? It has certainly taken the hard road to success.
I guess all it needs is to have one 'breakout' horse (likeGainsway did with Tapit) to make the farm viable. But first it has to attract good mares, and I cannot see owners of good mares sending them to non-commercial stallions.

Not sure what you mean by make a farm viable. Most stallions are owned by syndicates with only a small portion being owned by the farm. It takes a lot more than one stallion to keep a farm running. Spendthrift has Malibu Moon, though he is older, he is a good stallion whose foals sell well. They have Into Mischief who stands for $45,000 and his yearlings saw their average increase over $30,000 this year.Lord Helpus wrote:I am curious. For their other stallions they offer the Breed Secure and Share the Upside program, they do not care if the stallions can't get good mares. The one program gives you a lifetime breeding right in a stallion you use for X amount of years in a row, the other is to make sure that breeders don't take a huge loss at a sale if the foal doesn't sell well. They are also offering a $300,000 race for 2yos by their stallions, half the purse goes to the breeders, the other half to the current connections.
Most of the rest of their stallions are young with either just a 1-2 crops or no crops of racing age. They get A LOT of mares.

The Kingmambo line and its King Kamehameha branch especially are extremely popular in Japan right now.lurkey mclurker wrote:I wouldn't mind Azeri going to Rulership, that's one way to get the King Kamehameha line.tachyon wrote:Rulership(JPN), 2007H. Here below is the list of number of mares covered by the Kingmambo line stallions standing at Shadai Stallion Station in 2016.
Belshazzar(JPN) (King Kamehameha) 145
Eishin Flash(JPN) (King's Best) 196
King Kamehameha(JPN) (Kingmambo) 151
Lord Kanaloa(JPN) (King Kamehameha) 263
Rulership(JPN) (King Kamehameha) 280
Workforce(GB) (King's Best) 57
And there are many more Kingmambo line stallions who stand at other studs than Shadai.
I haven't got final numbers for the 2016 breeding season, but it looks like the Kingmambo line stallions cover about 20% of the broodmares in Japan.

I know that Shadai obviously has a monopoly in Japan, but to see a stallion farm with 27 stallions and 25 of them covering over 100 mares and 5 covering over 200... those are almost Coolmore numbers
No wonder it's almost impossible for any non-Shadai stallions to hit it big in Japan. Shadai stallions have to be covering, what, 75% of the mares in Hokkaido?

There are about 10,000 registered broodmares in Japan.Northport wrote:I know that Shadai obviously has a monopoly in Japan, but to see a stallion farm with 27 stallions and 25 of them covering over 100 mares and 5 covering over 200... those are almost Coolmore numbers

We may assume that about 90% of them were covered in 2016.
The total number of mares covered by Shadai stallions in 2016 was about 4,350.
So about 50% of the active broodmares in Japan went to Shadai stallions.
This is still a huge number indeed.
By the way, Stay Gold(JPN), died last year, was not standing at Shadai but at Big Red Farm / Breeders SS.
It's very difficult, but there remains a slim chance that non-Shadai stallions make it big in Japan.
ETA:
Screen Hero(JPN)(Grass Wonder), sire of Maurice & Gold Actor, is standing at Lex Stud, too.

I guess Al Shaqab has no reason to think that retiring two year olds to stud is a bad idea, as Gutaifan was the busiest Freshman sire in England and Ireland in 2016, covering 203 mares for a fee of €12,500.Northport wrote:Al Shaqab has done this in the past as well with another seemingly sound 2 year old - Gutaifan

They're going to get even more motivation to retire Mehmas if somehow he keeps his point lead in the Cartier 2yo colt division and is named champion (going out on a high note and all that). He only has a two point lead but it'd be easy enough to keep him in training for one more race. Get a good placing and he may seal it up since The Last Lion (who is two points behind) is done for the year. He does have Churchill to worry about (eight points behind) and Churchill has entries for two more races but so does Mehmas. Will be interesting to see if they try and chase it or if he's really already letting down.

Air Force Blue is retiring to Ashford. Will be interesting to see if Declaration of War stays there as well.

IMHO, Declaration of War was a superior racehorse, so unless his yearlings have been really disappointing, I'm not sure why Air Force Blue would be preferred over him. AFB was very good as a juvenile, but he finished at the back of the field in all four races this year.
I'm not a fan of precocious babies who get retired to stud without ever winning a graded stakes the next year. Or, in AFO's case, EVER winning.
Of course, Coolmore has farms all over the place, so maybe they'll just shuttle DoW someplace to service a new group of customers?

I wouldn't be surprised if DOW went back to Ireland. It seems everyone loves his stock over there. He averaged €120,048 ($134,644) for 21 sold (21 offered) at Goffs this week so there's obviously some demand. But with the way they kind of talked about him when I was there earlier this month, I'm also wondering if maybe there's a lease deal in the works. I hope not as I think he's the best they'll have from War Front for a few years (and that he has a bright future) but throw enough money at them and they'd sell/lease anyone on the U.S. roster.

Oh, frack.
I really hoped CJ would be the ONE to carry on Tiznow's line. His offspring are good looking, and there have been decent runners, but I guess the lack of Classic-winning colts convinced Winstar to part with him.
Double Frack.

http://www.drf.com/news/colonel-john-sold-stand-koreaWinStar Farm sire Colonel John has been sold to the Korea Thoroughbred Breeders Association (KTBA) to stand in Jeju-do, Korea in 2017.
“The KTBA is very excited to stand Colonel John,” said bloodstock agent Jun Park, a longtime advisor to the KTBA who brokered the deal. “He will be a wonderful addition to their growing breeding program.”
Colonel John will enter quarantine before shipping to South Korea at the end of October to take up residence at his new home Jeju Stud Farm, which also currently stands former American stallions Any Given Saturday and Chapel Royal. Because its racing takes place on dirt, Korea has invested heavily in American stock as it has built its Thoroughbred industry; the country also stands champion juvenile Hansen.
Colonel John, by WinStar stallion Tiznow, was bred and raced by the farm. He was a multiple Grade 1-winning 3-year-old in 2008, taking the Santa Anita Derby and Travers Stakes. He won or placed in six other stakes over his three seasons of racing, and retired with $1,779,012 in earnings.
As a stallion, Colonel John is led by Airoforce, winner of the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes and Grade 3 Bourbon Stakes and runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf last year. He is represented by 12 other stakes winners, including graded winners Cocked and Loaded, Dalmore, Southern Honey, and Concave.

Outwork and Speightster have both been retired to WinStar. Colonel John leaves, two new stallions arrive.
http://www.paulickreport.com/news/blood ... farm-2017/
I have to think that Outwork stopped improving for him to be retired so soon. Or maybe an injury?
Too bad about Speightster, as he looked SO good in the 2015 Dwyer. Really had hopes for him to make some noise in the handicap division this year. But IIRC, they had to shelve him due to an injury. Guess he just couldn't recover enough to return to the races.

Exagerrator is also going to WinStar. I'd imagine in 2017. It wouldn't surprise me if they sell or move someone else, maybe multiple. I'd guess Sidney's Candy is next in line followed by Drosselmeyer, though their first crops are only 3.BaroqueAgain1 wrote:Outwork and Speightster have both been retired to WinStar.
