I should have added that yesterday's Tapit filly won't be the last yearling purchase at the Keeneland sale, all being well. The stable has now bought a nice Malibu Moon filly from a productive family.

The last time I remember a purchase for the Phipps Stable was in the early 90's with Our Country Place. I remember hearing something about her before Country Hideaway won her debut. Something like she was enter in the Keeneland yearling sale and got sick and was pulled out. They purchased her privately after that. She never race but what a great brood mare.

Previous to this week's sales, the last occasion a horse was bought at public auction was the race mare Colonial Review - in partnership. Back in 1997, if I recall.

Historically, yearlings have always been bought privately, as well as the preference to sell privately when possible. I don't recall a yearling ever being purchased at public auction, always preferring to do so privately. Times were different then.

The change in focus is partly based on the model that has worked well for the Janney stable in recent years and resources available since Orb and Point of Entry retired. With regard to the yearling purchases, dam side we will begin to see a shift away from the Mr Prospector, Storm Cat and A. P. Indy blood that dominates the current broodmare band and has seen a stagnation in the type of runners available.

I hope this makes sense. The broodmare band certainly needs an infusion of new blood and recent events have created a lot of excitement for those involved in and who follow the family's horses.

I Forgot about Colonial Review. I think it's great they bought (are buying????) some yearling. Love the breeding on the Malibu Moon from the St Liam Family.

Phipps Stable re-enters auction arena as buyers

Over the past few decades, finding a sales ticket at auction with “Phipps Stable” on the buyer line proved as fruitful as hunting the Loch Ness Monster. The vaunted program’s aversion to buying at public auction became such a cornerstone of its operation that it warranted mention in Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps’s New York Times obituary this year.

The Phipps breeding program has been carefully curated over the generations, both human and equine, earning myriad trophies and sending an army of sons and daughters into the studbook.

There was little fanfare when Phipps Stable made its return to the buying bench during Book 1 of the Keeneland September yearling sale, landing a Malibu Moon filly for $675,000 and a Tapit filly for $430,000. In a three-day span where 82 yearlings sold for $500,000 or more, it was business as usual.

That was fine by Daisy Phipps Pulito, co-owner and racing manager of Phipps Stable and daughter of the elder Phipps. They weren’t coming to make a splash, they were looking for fillies who fit the program.

My Impression won impressively at Laurel Park yesterday to gain her first Graded stakes for the Janney colors and adds even more depth to an exciting group of fillies; Onus, On Leave, Fair Point, All In Fun.

Revved Up also ran pretty well on his stakes debut, closing well from a long way back. The colt would have preferred a bit of cut in the ground and as he continues to strengthen, further distance. It's nice to think that Storm Flag Flying can eventually produce a stakes winner, so we shall see. Her last foal is a full sister to Revved Up and is at Claiborne Farm.

Sparrow Castle, thank you for sharing the article on the recent sale purchases. As mentioned, 11 broodmares are planned to be offered at the November sale, most of whom are maidens on the track, so a much needed cull.

Sail Ahoy (Bernardini - Matlacha Pass by Seeking the Gold) was scratched out of an AOC $80k at a Mile on the Turf today (MTO?) and entered in an Allowance (Race 4) at 7f on the Turf at Belmont on Saturday. This would be his first start since his 4th in the Remsen last November.

Seems like a pretty slow few weeks for the Phipps horses. I thought Revved Up ran sneaky good in his stakes debut and should be better going longer. I see Hereditary is entered to make his turf debut on Friday.

Might not fit the purpose of this thread, but I found this fun article about 7 year old Grand Manan (Giant's Causeway - Manoa by Seeking the Gold) who is finding his best stride in jumps racing.

A flop on the flat (he was beaten in a $8,000 maiden claimer in his final start for Tim Salzman in 2012) and a flop in the hunt field (Meister was the last-chance saloon), the bay gelding didn’t make a sanctioned start from Dec. 5, 2012 at Laurel Park until winning the Miles Valentine novice timber at Fair Hill in May 2015.

Phipps Stable Marches On

Over the decades, the Phipps Stable has campaigned a legion of homebred turf luminaries, but the historic name appeared in an unusual place two months ago as the buyer of a pair of yearlings at the Keeneland September sale. The stable returns to a somewhat more regular role when it offers 11 mares, including GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Pleasant Home (Seeking the Gold), through the Claiborne Farm consignment at the upcoming Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
