South Africa's Drakenstein Stud announces 2016 fees

Drakenstein Stud in South Africa announced today their stallion service fees for the 2016 Southern Hemisphere breeding season.

The current leading sire in South Africa, Trippi, will be standing at a fee of 250,000 South African Rand ($15,851 U.S.) and will likely have another full book this year.

Duke of Marmalade, the sire four European classic winners last year, will remain at the same fee of R100,000 ($6,340).

Meanwhile Philanthropist, the champion all-weather sire in North America last year, and sire of two champions in Canada, as well as some impressive juvenile winners in South Africa from his first crop, is set at R50,000 ($3,170).

What a Winter has been strongly supported by breeders from the first day he went to stud, and with his fee remaining at R20,000 ($1,268) he remains one of the best value stallions in the country.

The Group 1 winning son of Galileo, Kingsbarns, will be covering a limited book this year at a discounted fee due to fertility issues.

The new arrivals at Drakenstein this year are Horse of the Year’s Futura and Legislate. The multiple Champions dominated racing in South Africa for two seasons winning four Grade 1’s apiece and multiple Equus Awards, including a Horse of the Year title each. The two sons of Dynasty are both standing their first season at R20,000 ($1,268).

He's been either the sire or broodmare sire of the winners of all four of the French and British Guineas this year and has 2 entries right now as a sire in the Irish 2k Guineas in addition to being the broodmare sire or grandsire of five others. The 1,000 Guineas is even more Galileo town. He has four entries and is sire or damsire of two others. I think he's laughing as he leaves his daddy's hold in the dust right now.

Intikhab, sire of top-class Snow Fairy dies at 22

DERRINSTOWN STUD have announced the death of their grand servant Intikhab due to a cardiac condition. His death at the age of 22 comes just a couple of months after his retirement from stud duties.

You're right if you're saying that British breeders may have painted themselves into a genetic corner with their love of Northern Dancer, through his sons Sadler's Wells and Danzig.
In a discussion of Frankel's early success at stud (over on another forum), one of the members posted a six-generation chart for Frankel's first winner, Cunco. Northern Dancer is doubled in the sire and also in the dam.

It is good news. Only one or two of his first 10 starters even hit the board, so at least he's got a winner and that's out of the way! Maybe they're just not the precocious sort?

Seems like that's already starting to become the case. A few of my European breeder friends came over to the U.S. for the first time last fall/winter to buy at the sales (both yearling and broodmares). US-breds also seemed to be talked about a lot more this year than previous years at Royal Ascot (probably thanks to a pretty aggressive marketing campaign that's been launched on social media/publications). The next few years will be interesting, between yesterday's events and the US's efforts to bring more buyers over. It's a big bummer Scat Daddy died, he's really become huge there over the last few years.

Do you happen to know if they were on the turf? I wonder if his foals will prefer the dirt? Or they could just not be precocious.
