I was just going to add: please don't apologize for 'hijacking' the thread! I am so glad your new little one is doing well, and even better that your mare is showing such improvement. Please keep on keeping us posted about both of them.

Sad Update: I apologize for not updating last night, yesterday things started going south for Lily again so I figured I'd wait before updating in case things turned back around.

We had to euthanize Lily this afternoon. She started going downhill yesterday, her temperature was staying normal but her heartrate was going back up, she was losing interest in eating and hadn't passed manure since Thursday night. She wasn't acting painful and her condition stayed stable through last night. She wasn't getting worse, but she wasn't getting better.

This morning her heartrate was still up and soon after I got in she started acting seriously uncomfortable for the first time since she got ill. Things quickly escalated from there and she started showing signs of going into shock so the decision was made to end her suffering. Everyone at the farm/clinic is devastated, especially after she rallied a few days ago we really had our hopes up. But as we all know as quickly as things can get better, they can get worse even faster.

Not that it will change anything but we are going to perform a necropsy on her in the morning for curiosities sake to find out exactly what went wrong. I'll post an update here after we finish. Thank you all for all the jingles and good thoughts. From the beginning we knew it was very unlikely she'd recover but you always do hope. :'(

RIP - Whipporwill Creek (2005-2016)

For a bit of good news, her colt is doing fantastic. His surrogate mom has been fantastic it took her barely 24 hours to fall in love with him. They spend all day out in a nice big grass paddock where he rips around like a little lunatic then when he needs a nap he makes himself a nest out of the tall grass and passes out. As devastating as it is losing Lily she sure has left a piece of herself behind with this colt.

Oh, Mintano, I'm so sorry. Yeah we always hope that things will turn around, but can't let them suffer. Hope the necropsy provides some answers. It will be interesting to hear the results.

Glad her colt is doing so well, and is a little piece of Lily. Hope he does his mama proud! RIP Whipporwill Creek.

So sorry to hear of your loss- I am on the other end of the spectrum- had a gorgeous filly born yesterday am- but very septic and with severe brain damage. Took her to nicu- but didn't respond to treatment. She was the last foal from Catienus- as he was pensioned after he bred my mare, so I had such high hopes. Spent the last 2 days bawling. I am so sorry for your loss.

Oh so sorry, genuinerizk. Foaling season can be so joyful and so painful. Awful that both of you had to experience the worst. May better days be ahead.

So sorry to read the awful news about Lily and the Catienus filly. My condolences, Mintano and genuinerizk. :(
I hope Lily's necropsy provides some answers for you...and that the information you and your vet gain from that sad examination can help another mare in the future.

Thank you all for the kind words and genuinerizk I'm so sorry to hear about your filly. :(

The necropsy revealed that the uterine artery ruptured. We tapped her belly to release some of the peritoneal fluid that was building up and making her so uncomfortable. With the release of pressure from the fluid being gone the artery gave way and she was bleeding out. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, it seems the bleeding never quite stopped and the fluid build-up was helping keep it under control but the fluid was making her miserable and causing its own problems.

Really sucks, but we did everything we could for her. Just wish the outcome could have been different. But on the bright side we have a handsome colt with the most ridiculous personality. He's certain he's the coolest foal he knows and seeing as he hasn't met any other foals yet he would be right!

My sincere condolences to you, Mintano, about Lily, and to you, Genuinerizk, about your Catienus filly. Time will help heal your sorrow, but right now, it's devastating.

Mintano: that foal is adorable. And very, very special. If you can, please keep us updated on his progress.

Sorry to hear of the losses of Mintano and genuinerizk. Breeding horses is more than a business; how can you not get attached to these animals?

I hope you both are able to find peace during this difficult time.

Mintano, just wanted to express my condolences. We lost a mare earlier this year with what I suspect was a similar ruptured uterus while foaling. What a heartbreaking moment. Glad to hear the foal is doing well.

Sidenote, did this mare have a filly of hers run at Belmont on Friday? I saw her name and I feel like I just came across it in PPs recently.

Thanks HB and I'm sorry for your loss as well.

She did, her 3yo Katie Ice finished second on the lawn in a NYbred maiden special at a big price, that was nice to see!
