I had an ex show walking horse many years ago. His fetlocks were terribly scarred. Going bareback he would do a running walk that could put him in the walking horse world championship. With a saddle, you could use a whip to get him out of a walk, but he hated a running walk.

Big Shack raced after the Preakness (2nd BC Mile to Caleb's Posse) and won the Met, Clark (I think!) and CD Handicap.Flanders wrote:They never said why they retired him or why he didn't race again after the Preakness. After the Preakness they said they were bypassing the Belmont but that he was healthy and happy. They were going to give him a little break and come back in the Swaps or a turf race, either the La Jolla or Del Mar Derby. Obviously that didn't happen because he never raced again. I don't know that they said anything else. I think there were rumors going around that he had some problems.sweettalk wrote:if i remember, he ran in the preakness then was retired at the end of that year? i just assumed he had some nagging issues that they were tired of fighting, but of course i can't prove that.Northport wrote:I was always bummed that they retired Creative Cause so early with really no reason given, but wow is he stunning. Carpe Diem looks just like his sire. Giant's Causeway has some nice looking predecessors.

DALAKHANI, who stands at the Aga Khan's Haras de Bonneval in Normandy, has been ruled out of covering for the rest of the season due to an unspecified "veterinary problem".

See, I see that and instantly think "Goods and Services tax".

I assume it's a Goods and Services Tax, like a value added tax. Canada has/had a GST too. As non-Canadians, we used to be able to get the tax back at the border on the clothes and non-perishables we bought in Canada, but not anymore. Seems odd they'd tax a stud fee but what governments do often seem strange to me.lurkey mclurker wrote:What is "GST"?

STARSPANGLEDBANNER TO COOLMORE AUSTRALIA
Champion Sprinter Starspangledbanner will return to Coolmore Australia for the 2016 season having stood the last three southern hemisphere seasons at Rosemont Stud in Victoria where he was also foaled and raised.
“Last season Anthony Mithen told us that Starspangledbanner’s fertility had improved significantly to the point where he had over 50 mares in foal so we decided to shuttle him to Ireland,” explained Tom Magnier.
“Up there he has exceeded all expectations with 50 mares already in foal and his fertility is excellent. All the experts are literally dumbfounded. We are extremely grateful to Anthony and all his staff and vets at Rosemont Stud for doing such a fine job with the horse.”

I hear you. Just glad he's getting more mares in foal now.Northport wrote:I don't know, Coolmore had kind of kicked him to the curb when his fertility slumped. Then Rosemont puts in the hours and gets results and the horse goes back to Coolmore again.

I would assume it is GST, Canadian here and I can confirm that horses when sold by a business (such as a breeder, equestrian centre etc.) as opposed to a private individual, also have taxes on their sale, and this affects Stud Fees. Because Stud service is... well a service, and usually the entities standing stallions (be that in racing or elsewhere in the horse world) are businesses, they are taxed.Sparrow Castle wrote:I assume it's a Goods and Services Tax, like a value added tax. Treve, it's the various kinds of taxes that confuse me. Is the GST the only tax collected on stud fees? For clothing bought in Canada, the GST was in addition to sales taxes. And I won't mention the HST in some places. I know I should just learn about the various taxes, rather than stay confused as I travel in Canada and other countries.

I didn't know Vancouver was due to stand this year in Australia. He only has one G1 win to his name and if he has to be back in Australia by September 1st he is going to need to rack up some G1 wins in Europe pretty quickly to justify that somewhat ridiculous fee.

The various taxes vary provincially (in types and in rates). Because essentially there are two sets of taxes - federal and provincial. The HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) is in the provinces where the provinces have chosen to merge the provincial tax with the federal tax. So as you see it on receipts and bills it is a single tax.Sparrow Castle wrote:Treve, it's the various kinds of taxes that confuse me. Is the GST the only tax collected on stud fees? The other provinces use GST + PST (provincial sales tax). So on your bill you will see two separate taxes. The GST is the same around the country, but the provinces control the PST and the rest of the HST. So for example in Quebec, the national government might have set the GST at 7% but the province sets the PST at 8% so on anything you'd purchase in Quebec you are paying roughly 15% in sales tax. In Ontario however, while the GST is still 7% they may have set their PST at 4% so you're looking at 11% in sales taxes. In both cases on your bill you will see the two separate taxes calculated for their additional costs.
Hope this clarifies somewhat lol. GST = federal, PST = provincial, HST = the two together.
It would be less confusing if all provinces used HST though, I will give you that.
