Sounds like they are doing all the right things and he should be fine. May take a little while for him to catch up to the other foals his age though.
So Z being overdue contributed to this "staining"? Gosh that's an odd name for a condition. So if all is ok, they should be back at LE tomorrow evening. Boy, I hope all is well.

The "staining" apparently happens when the foal defecates in utero and then breathes in the goop. The mare's amniotic fluid is stained by the foal's premature poop. IIRC.
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

So foal's do not defecate in utero? I had no idea. And how did those in attendance know? Was the foal in respiratory distress when it foaled? That must have been scary. No way could I work in that field. I'd have a coronary.

I guess, and I only know what Google tells me, the amniotic fluid is visibly dirty or stained when the mare passes it. I admit I never thought about what fetuses (human or otherwise) do elimination-wise before birth. Getting TMI.

I'm no mare, but when I had my son I also had "meconium staining" (seriously, they used the same term!) when they broke my water. When he was born, the NICU team had to be there because there is a serious risk of breathing issues when the baby comes out. Even after the birth and everything seems to normalize, there is continued monitoring of the baby and mom because infection can set in quickly without warning. I ended up running a temp around 104 a few hours after the birth and had to be heavily dosed with antibiotics - which they attributed to the meconium.

For those who are really interested in foaling complications this is a good overview from Merck. :ugeek:

Re: overdue, when was she bred? There's a pretty large window for what's considered a normal foaling date. We use about 340 days as a "due date" but anywhere from 320 to 370 days is considered normal. It definitely sounds like Z took her sweet time, but she probably wasn't overdue in a medical sense.

I hope all is well with the little guy!

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere it was early May. It definitely was May, just not sure whether late or early.

i think she was covered in April, around the 22nd or so. They made an announcement that she was 36 days in foal on May 27th.

Does anyone know how many days she carried with the other foals to figure an average?

Second in a row now, just coincidence both were by War Front. I'll bet they try again. She probably went way overdue, and this was a complication. Just speculating, however.

Still isn't loading but I'd be willing to bet it was an infection related to the meconium. It's bad news. Ugh shame.

This is from their website: http://www.zenyatta.com/news/zenyattas- ... assed-away
VERSAILLES, KY — (April 13, 2016) It is with heavy hearts that Team Zenyatta and Lane’s End Farm must announce the passing of Zenyatta’s 2016 foal by War Front. His death occurred at approximately 9:00 am this morning due to complications of meconium aspiration syndrome. We express our deep gratitude to Dr. Peter Morresey and the professionals at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital who worked tirelessly to support the mare and foal. Zenyatta is in good health and back home at Lane’s End Farm.

We were right. What do they do now? Wait for next year, then breed her in February or early March? Or send her back to the shed one more time this year, for a late baby next season?

Her and Rachel really don't seem to have a lot of luck on the reproduction front.

I'd breed her back and get another April foal, but then the Mosses don't treat her like a normal broodie. She'll get the year off if I had to wager.
