Real Impact (Deep Impact X Tokio Reality, by Meadowlake) is set to be the first son of Deep Impact to stand in Australia, as he will be taking up stud duties at Arrowfield Stud after serving the Northern Hemisphere season at Shadai.

On March 25, 1986, in one of the back pastures at Paris, Kentucky’s Stone Farm, a miscarriage-prone mare named Wishing Well foaled a nearly jet-black son of Halo. The foal was weak, sickly and had crooked back legs. He nearly died of a viral infection before his first birthday and was considered to be only valuable as potential bloodstock.

Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Sunday Silence, the broodmare sire of G2 UAE Derby winner Lani and the paternal grandsire of G1 Dubai Turf winner Real Steel this past weekend, was sold to Japan for stud duty because there wasn’t interest in him here. In a Daily Racing Form piece on January 3, 2014, the venerable John Sparkman recalled this: “According to comments from American breeders at the time, Sunday Silence, despite being the American racehorse with the best racetrack form since Spectacular Bid, was not sired by a horse they regarded as a sire of sires, despite the fact that his sire, Halo, had led the American sire list twice.”

Kudos to Koji Maeda who sent Heavenly Romance, one of the most beloved daughters of Sunday Silence, to Tapit.

I believe that Lani(USA) is bred to win some races.

And hopefully he will improve his performance in the most prestigious race in the world at Churchill Downs (if he can have a better break from the gate, haha!).

and.. here's the replay of Heavenly Romance's epic win in the G1 Tenno Sho Autumn, 2000m turf at Tokyo, in 2005.
That was an incredibly deep field (please check out the chart below) in which she defeated the likes of Zenno Rob Roy, Dance in the Mood, Heart's Cry, Hat Trick, Sweep Tosho, Admire Groove, Tap Dance City and so on!!

Lani has a fabulous pedigree and I wish him all the best wherever he races.

As for the U.S. breeders who dismissed Sunday Silence as a stallion prospect, all I can say is sometimes the most knowledgeable, intelligent people also can be dumber than dirt.

Personally, no. While Shadai didn't have the broodmare band in 1991 that they have now, they still had some outstanding mares. Sunday Silence was still given every chance over there to become a replacement for their other super-sire, Northern Taste.

By the sounds of it, no one in America was all that infatuated with Sunday Silence as a sire, and anyone would be sending him a mare at all, it wouldn't be nearly as high in quality as the ones he received while at Shadai.

Maybe he could have made it with a less than stellar selection of mares for his first few crops (a la Tapit and War Front), but I don't think he could have been as successful in America if it were not for the full support of the Shadai powerhouse.

Sometimes things just work out for the best.
Sunday Silence completely changed the breed in Japan, with breeders there sending him the best mares they could buy from all over the world. Even a successful stallion in the US would not have been supported to that degree.
So, Sunday's move to Japan was the best thing that could have happened to him...and, as it turns out, everyone has benefited. His progeny are heading off to stand on farms all over the world, basically Appleseeding Sunday Silence's seed.

I kind of like that he went over there and became a super sire. It's a part of Sunday Silence folklore!
I think it's silly to blame breeders for what-could-have-been, those damn fools!, when things may not have worked out the same.

Not at all. I think he would have been a useful sire but I don't think he would have ever gotten the amount of mare power he received in Japan. I've heard arguments that he would have gotten more mares as his foals proved themselves but I don't think he would have gotten enough good mares in those first few crops to have the success they imagine him having. They couldn't drum up much support for him here, there's no way that they would have all of a sudden received a ton of Grade 1 winning mares out of thin air when breeders showed they didn't want him.

Yes.

Please, please don't get me wrong!
I have absolutely no intention to blame or insult the breeders in North America.
But I, as a big fan of Sunday Silence, believe that he could be a bit 'GREATER' than what many in North America want him to be.
If he stood in the states, he could have ended up a champion TURF sire at least in North America.
It could take some years, but we must have seen most of Breeders Cup races on turf dominated by his offspring and realized that European turfers were less special (going 12F on FIRM turf) than what many want them to be. (<-- oops sorry, haha!)

He started with modest number of mares at stud. (only covered 77 mares, 84, 99 in the first three years at stud)
He is GREAT because he is a stallion who made his way by improving his mares.
Did he breed to many G1 (or G1 equivalent) winning mares or G1 winner producing mares during his stud career?
No.
It was AFTER his death that Shadai started to buy up elite mares from all around the world....

Victoire Pisa(JPN)[2007H.
