I'm not sure I trust the color accuracy of a Youtube video, especially since there seemed to be an overall orange-ish cast to that footage.
If he was DNA tested...and I have no reason to think that this would be something his connections would, or could, fake...he carries no red or agouti gene. IIRC, that means he can't BE bay.
As far as "go buy a Paint," aren't most Paints of Quarterhorse or working stock heritage? If someone wants a horse with Thoroughbred or Warmblood conformation, that might not work for them.
Hopefully, Calumet will release some information that answers all (or most of) our questions about Risque's future.

Shrug. Why do we need anything, really? Because some people want them? I dunno. I never said the color should be the point of breeding, but one can aim to breed for good specimens in an interesting color. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, it's just a process to get there (and it requires people who want to improve the realm they're breeding in, which...yeah, that's a crapshoot under any breeding standard).Life At Zen wrote:Why do we need coloured TB's? I'm happy with a good horse in any color, but I get wanting a good horse in an extra cool color. If you love TBs and love paint patterns, there's not much to reconcile the two. You can find some very nice warmbloods or a cross, surely, but some people feel passionate about wanting a pure TB. I think it'd be neat -- I'd buy one, if it was the right horse for me under the spots. I wouldn't breed for one, but someone with time/money/expertise might make it happen.
Why do we need Knabstruppers? We don't, but people like spots and the breed is going in interesting directions under the care of those looking to improve it, so I suppose I'll take it.
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on the horse!

Plenty of Paints out there with heavy thoroughbred influence and no, they aren't the stock type you see in the halter rings.BaroqueAgain1 wrote:I'm not sure I trust the color accuracy of a Youtube video, especially since there seemed to be an overall orange-ish cast to that footage.

I realized I didn't know where the overo in TB comes from - turns out no one might, but along the way I pulled up Mumtaz's lovely site. Some good reading for those new to the color game who might be interested in what's unique about this guy, regardless of what the plans are for him. Elusive Quality and Racey Remarque are both mentioned.

(Also some neato photos of some maximally expressed DW and sabino TBs, for those who like a LOT of white...)

well if you can't raise a horse that can race, you might as well breed for color

I doubt they'd advertise him. He did cover 8 mares in Kentucky in 2015.CoronadosQuest wrote:Whatever happened to that stallion? I never saw him on Calumet..
They mention the stallion in the article and Calumet's stallion division director said Kelley plans on racing his foals and also had bought a white filly at some point.

The Jockey Club may only have those eight mares officially, but that doesn't mean he didn't impregnate more mares via AI, which would be allowed for Warmbloods, IIRC.
Now I'm really curious to see what his 2016 foals look like.

Does Brad Kelley breed other horses? Because if Risque Remarque was standing for other breeds, he would have to be advertised. It seems like Kelley doesn't want people to know he owns the horse so I doubt he bred any other mares, via AI or otherwise.

He may not have had to advertise him though, since it seems this was an established stallion before he was sold. Who knows though, he may have just bought him to experiment with personally.Flanders wrote:Does Brad Kelley breed other horses? I agree. If I had that much money I would too. It's admirable.Rainyday wrote:I have to admit I actually sort of admire Kelley for just doing whatever he wants with his stallion operation, commerciality be damned.

Because, when breeding for color --among other things-- is done thoughtfully and carefully, you sometimes get horses like this:Life At Zen wrote:Why do we need coloured TB's? Go buy a Paint. That Risque Remarque filly is pretty flashy, and it looks like that flash is painted on a very nice, leggy youngster. I'd love to see what she looks like in a year or two.

It should still never be the main focus of why you're breeding. Conformation and purpose/function are what you strive for. It's why we end up with so many backyard horses with flashy markings but awful conformation and temperaments.Starine wrote:Because, when breeding for color --among other things-- is done thoughtfully and carefully, you sometimes get horses like this:Life At Zen wrote:Why do we need coloured TB's?
