Pics of new foals you breed are a pick me up, trust me. Although we did recently lose a favorite mare we raced successfully during foaling, so disappointment in this sport/business is always right around the corner.

According to uma-furusato.com (Feb 25th), an official source for the Japanese breedings, Timber Country died of heart failure 10 p.m Feb 23th at Lex Stud where he had been pensioned.
Yoshiharu Izumiyama, stud manager at Lex, commented; ''Timber Country, star runner at track, sired many grade stakes winners at stud. He passed away in his sleep. May he rest in peace.''

Timber Country's tombstone will be located at Oh-My-Horse Park near Lex Stud.

Not a great month for sons of Fall Aspen, Bianconi died Feb. 5th in Australia at age 21 after suffering a back injury. He was half to Timber Country.

Now, if I had a mare and a small budget and just wanted to breed something for my own entertainment and racing pleasure... I'd look at Bluegrass Cat. $7500 gets you alot of horse and a better than average chance of leading that horse into the winners circle at some point. He was #33 on the sire list last year... right after Tiznow at $60k.

If you want to look in the Top 25 from last years sire list and you breed to race at a higher level, I'd take a hard look at City Zip at $40k. He's a lot of sirepower for $40k and #11 on the sire list. He's going to get you turf and dirt and can throw a nice stakes horse although they're probably not going more than a mile.. but that's the bread and butter at most tracks across the country.

Haven't his yearlings been selling like hot cakes for crazy prices on both sides of the pond? I'd assume the main motivation to go to War Front is breed-to-sell?

It's supply and demand with War Front. People will pay it, so they can charge it. He doesn't have that many outside seasons available. Most are taken by shareholders.

More of War Front's top runners are in Europe and the purses aren't as high. A horse whose offspring have global appeal is no small thing.

I am a HUGE fan of this horse, and I am happy to see him retired to stud. He was super classy on the track, he's gorgeous, and is very well-bred. Best of luck Excaper!

I think its a little over 2 weeks to be scanned in foal. So she would have been bred about 4 days before Valentine's Day, which is when sheds normally announce they open. However if you have a mare who is in heat, you can get in earlier.

All this talk about Untouched Talent... I didn't realize her 2013 colt, Finnegan, was born in Ireland. Who was the mare bred to there in 2013 (for a 2014 foal)?

I think she had a filly by Galileo in 2014.

Thanks. I looked it up awhile ago and remembered Galileo (of course) but couldn't remember if that was 2014 or 2015 (LOL because it was both). Wasn't on the laptop to look it up again.
