Coronado does your flashy POTN colt have a blue eye to go with that crazy blaze or is it just the camera?

Here's a stallion whose name I haven't heard in quite awhile. Scrimshaw's a son of Gulch out of a mare by Sham.

Love the photos of Soundwave with her "twins," although hate hearing that the second foal lost its mother. Is there any information about which mare passed away?
I know that some mares can be real milk machines when two foals are nursing, although I wonder if these two will get some bottles to supplement Soundwave's milk.

The mare who died might not be owned by Airdrie, not surprised they wouldn't give out the name. I'm a little surprised they tweeted the photos. I like the way the foals sorted out how they can nurse at the same time, one on each side of mom. Amazing the mare accepted a second foal. They are likely and rightly very proud of her. I didn't go looking for more info because I had to get back to work but, if I see more, I'll update the post.

Thanks, SP.
I remember my local Gypsy Horse breeder experienced problems with a surrogate mare (embryo transfer) when the mare rejected her newborn foal...aggressively. Another surrogate (a stout QH rescue) had foaled the day before, and the breeder put the rejected colt in with her.
No problem, she said. It was pretty funny watching that shiny, fine-coated QH mare mothering two chunky little Gypsy fuzzballs. And my lord, that mare was a milk motherload. Produced more than enough for the two colts.
I know that mares who will 1) accept another baby, and 2) produce enough milk for two tummies are rare, so bless Soundwave. She's a keeper.

Broodmare folks are very sweet and this made me smile. They are and should be proud of her. It's clear that she's a VERY good momma.Sparrow Castle wrote:They are likely and rightly very proud of her.
BA, that is a great story. I love surrogate mares -- they always look like they misplaced their real kid somewhere else and just decided to go with it.
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on the horse!

When I was growing up we had a mare that nursed any and all babies that wanted a drink at any given time. None of the other mommas cared their babies were taking a suckle, either. When people would as us about why she had so many different babies nursing, we would tell them "she has chocolate milk".
Have a nice weekend everyone!

Really sad the foal lost its dam but I'm glad it won't grow up without a mum!
There was a warmblood foal at a barn I used to ride at who lost mama not long after his birth when she colicked... He was bottle fed but in order to teach him manners they found two mares willing to mother him, and rotated between the two... but one of them was a small pony so he towered over her way before it was time to wean... good thing she wasn't feeding him indeed
