Any stallion brought into the United States has to cover two mares before being able to leave quarantine.
Pardon my ignorance, I know the JC requires live cover for registration but does the US agency in charge of live animal quarantine have the same requirement? It seems illogical to require that a stallion who
might be a disease carrier cover mares - in effect, potentially infecting them as well...
So, to put it indelicately - they just test the semen, right? And if so, why can't they procure that sample the same way they would for AI? Film it, follow chain of possession like they do for forensic evidence, why wouldn't that be enough of a guarantee for carrier-free status?
And since I'm asking anyway, what would happen to a stallion & the mares he covered if they were found to be infected? Treatment or euthanasia or...?
