Not confirmed yet, but looks like Zenyatta's full brother will be named Musketeer

I suspect that will be rejected for being too similar to Musketier (GER), which is a permanent name.

I've seen names rejected for less of a resemblance, but Coolmore seems to have special naming powers, so I won't be shocked if it goes through. That name may indicate that they don't think he totally sucks, though.

That was my first thought as well... though if he was really showing some promise I expect they would name him after a specific musketeer. The more precise and historic the figure = the better the horse (or so it seems)

There was a Musketeer approved in 2006, was that before Musketier (born 2002) became permanently protected?

D'Artagnan is perhaps the only specific musketeer name of note, but it is in use.

Geez. This Musketeer thing must be some kind of federal case. Names don't normally sit as "New" this long without being denied or approved.

Surprisingly "Aramis" is way more popular in France. I have known many a school horse or pony named such. Athos is also common. And I've heard both used for human boys too. In fact thinking of it I don't think I've ever encountered "D'Artagnan" at all, even though everyone knows the name.

Porthos is a permanently protected name.

Trivia for the day: Incidentally, one of the discussions in another thread was about the IFHA and exactly what they do outside of ranking the world's top horses. As one of the Jockey Club's criteria for naming, they won't accept any names on the International List of Protected Names maintained by the IFHA:

Is it from this year or something? It is not on the list provided above.

Hah okay! I don't normally check the actual list, simply look up names in the database and check if they've won or bred anything of note etc.

So, "Musketeer" disappeared for 2013 Vertigineux last week. Now it's back, saying, "Not checked." But, a new name, "De Coronado," was submitted.

De Coronado is approval pending, so that will most likely be his name.

Seems like a strong name to me. Francisco Vázquez de Coronado is credited with discovering the Grand Canyon, among other landmarks in the Southwest.
