I can say with confidence that it was NOT among Farley's best.

My personal faves are Black Minx, and The Blood Bay Colt and its 'twin' book, the name of which escapes me now.

IIRC, that would The Black Stallion's Sulky Colt (published 1954), the follow-up to The Blood Bay Colt.

I loved Black Minx, but dooooooods... no votes for Son of the Black Stallion???

*coughcough* Oh Treve, I myself may have written the pedigree of each horse inside the front cover...

There are parts of Son of the Black Stallion stamped forever into my memory...like Henry's hot potato 'cure' for Satan's dangerous tendency to bite. :o
Has anyone here ever tried it?

That was actually Black Minx...and she had been spoiled by her previous owners. I never forgot that scene!

Let's see...Son of the Black Stallion, his name was Satan? He and Henry had a battle almost unto death, and then I think the colt became tractable afterwards. Another memorable scene.

I think I have all the series alart from one or two of the latter books.

IIRC, Satan bolts and jumps the tall fence around his paddock, and the lead rope trailing from his halter gets caught on the fence. He nearly throttles himself, but Henry frees him in time. The colt shows his gratitude by not trying to kill him anymore. :P ;)

And of course Henry inevitably develops an affection for him. Also wasn't Black Sand previously abused by owners as well?

I can't even deal with Black Sand, that touched way too close to home with what happened during the race.

[left intentionally vague so as not to spoil, plus it's just upsetting] :(((((((((((((

Oh man, the Black Stallion books. I actually collect them, as in, I have four different sets of the books, as well as a few random other copies, all different publish dates, none a complete set. I don't think I've read all of them, but most of them, as well as the more recent ones written by the younger Farley.

Darn the segue this thread took... now I had to go look at my current Black Stallion books - discards from my school library, same covers as the ones from my childhood but NO ILLUSTRATIONS WHAT IS THAT. And now I'm trying to talk myself out of replacing them all via eBay and kicking myself for ever letting them go in the first place. :-/

(Also, I just always assumed Black Pepper was Black Minx's filly from Wintertime  )

Adding the Japanese horse that Tachyon posted about, Immortal, because if he isn't black I don't know what is:

It's been approximately a billion years since I read these books since I am now officially an old--but I thought this too.

You mean. . . there are MORE Black Stallion books "written by the younger Farley. . . ?" WHERE HAVE THEY BEEN THE LAST FIFTY YEARS!!!!

Does it say something about me that I remember the Black Minx/Wintertime romance more clearly than some of my early dates?
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

Idolo Portena finished a decent third in the Razorback at Oaklawn today. He is a handsome hunk of a horse, and I think he will improve off this race.
