I really wanted this handsome, versatile stallion to succeed. One of the last scions of the Buckpasser line...maybe he'll be supported as a regional sire?

Passing of Scat Daddy: "Scat Daddy was in the best of health but totally unexpectedly he dropped dead when walking out of his paddock (1/2)
Everyone here at Ashford is very upset as he was a smashing horse with a great career ahead of him.” Dermot Ryan, Ashford Stud (2/2)

You're not kidding. High highs and low lows. Weren't you sending one to him?

Posted this in Racing before looking here. I was just horrified to see it in my newsfeed. The fact that a totally healthy horse can just keel over never ceases the haunt me.

I really liked him, as a racehorse and as a sire. Just gutting.
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on the horse!
Like to see some stuck-up jockey boy sittin' on Dan Patch? Make your blood boil? Well, I should say!

Yes, and Ashford is pushing hard for the mare to go to AP now. SD passing sure does open up a lot of top mares for the TC winner, though, as they try and fill his book.

Thanks for elaborating without me asking. I was curious what happened with his book in this case.

So sad.

I wonder if Coolmore will try to bring in one of his sons or a similarly bred young stallion to try to help take over his book. Like they did when George Washington was infertile. You know SD's book was huge.

I was just trying to figure out if he had a son that looked promising as a stud. Daddy Long Legs is already standing in Chile, where SD was doing so spectacularly well and I'm sure this is a huge, huge loss.

Is El Kabeir still in training?

"I wonder if Coolmore will try to bring in one of his sons..."

Maybe No Nay Never? Coolmore owns him, IIRC.
Although NNN seems to be mainly a grass horse, whereas Scat Daddy had proven he could sire good dirt horses, which made him so desirable in this country.

I wonder if it will ever be announced....?

But Havana, who won the Gr1 Champagne over Honor Code and Ride on Curlin and was 2nd in the BC Juvy is standing in the Philippines.

Did Scat Daddy shuttle this year? I am just asking because I remember War Pass died in a similar fashion not long after he returned from shuttling. He was also a young stallion.

Very sad news.

The more I think about it, the more I think this would be difficult to do. Holy Roman Emperor was retired to replace George Washington. They were similarly bred, top class race horses without a proven stud record. With Scat Daddy's big jump in stud fee and success, he undoubtedly would've had an excellent quality book of mares. I don't think they could get mare owners to transfer over to one of SD's sons, none of them are THAT good or well bred yet. I think they will try to get mare owners to go to AP, as stated above, or one of their other stallions, Bobby, Verrazano, Mo, etc.

On the bright side, have a few more Scat Daddy crops coming, and let's hope there are some good sons in there to carry on....
