V - I've always thought to ask but always forget. Are you in on any mares yourself?

I wonder if we won't hear of farms having to deal on a bunch of these high fees. There are only so many mares that breeders put these kind of fees in.
Predictably, send two mares to AP, fee for each is $100,000. And it's not hard to get to him from what I'm told.

It's not hard to get to any Coolmore stallion, is it?

I'd not be surprised if that's true. I realize they know more than me, but I couldn't imagine who was sending a mare at the advertised price.

While generally true (in stark contrast to Claiborne to put it nicely), there is still a limit to the number of mares a stallion can handle. I've been shut out a time or two with pretty nice mares -- the stallions were popular.

Not anymore. I've had 3 mares in the past and all were nightmares. Sold one mare, so that one was ok. Spent $15k trying to save a foal that wouldn't have been viable as a racehorse and still lost her. Then the mare died a few months later of a ruptured intestine. I didn't even have a chance to try to save her -- got the call from the farm and had to make the decision then to put her down. The one foal I did get out of her I had to give away. Then the next mare, had one foal to sell decently, but lost her to laminitis the next year and had to put her down (while carrying her foal, so lost it too).

So now I'm just the owner of two Tenn Walker mares who are only used for riding. ;-)

And you hear a lot about their stallions' libido issues as the season goes along. I've heard of multiple mares being forced to switch because the one they were booked to wouldn't cover the mare. Scat Daddy will apparently breed a hole in the wall, though.

I know Giant's Causeway and Looking at Lucky are extremely slow. I had one guy tell me it took Giant's Causeway over an hour to cover a mare.

Flowers, candle-lit dinner and a long walk in the moonlight through a grassy paddock first? Then asking nicely before getting to the 'deed?' :P ;)

Cool, thanks for the info. ^_^ And the only reason I was wondering about Curlin in particular is because he moved *and* went up. :)

Yeah, I can't understand why anyone would criticize a "guy" for NOT taking the "Wham bam thank you ma'am" approach. :P
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

Mare better be the soundest animal in the barn to send to this guy. A lot of talent but no body to hold it together.

Darley in Japan announces stud fees for the 2016 season
Darley has announced the fees for the five stallions that will stand at their stud in Japan for the 2016 season.

King’s Best, whose first Japan-bred crop will run in 2016, remains at a fee of 2.5 million yen. His first yearlings in Japan have been very well received and he is of course already a proven sire, having been responsible for Derby winners both in Japan and the UK.

Admire Moon has sired a number of high-quality horses from his latest two-year-old crop, with many showing Classic potential. His 2016 fee will be 2.0 million yen.

Pyro becomes more popular year on year thanks to his high ratio of winners. His offspring are also known for their versatility, performing on both the turf and the dirt. His fee for 2016 is 2.0 million yen.

Dubawi’s Dubai World-Cup winning son Monterosso will see his first runners next year and will stand at a fee of 1.5 million yen. He is one of best sons of world-leading sire Dubawi, whose own stud fee in 2016 equates to 41 million yen.

The ever-popular Furioso, who has covered more than 100 mares in each of his first three seasons, will stand at 0.5 million yen.

Shotaro Kajiya, Darley’s Nominations Manager in Japan, said, “We have a proven stallion in King’s Best, whose first Japanese crop will make their racecourse debuts in 2016, plus the very popular Pyro, who has already sired an impressive number of winners.

Admire Moon has sired some very high quality horses this year, many of whom are on their way to the Classics.

In addition to our proven stallions, we also have some exciting younger stallions in Monterosso, whose sire is the great European stallion Dubawi. Monterosso and Furioso will both have their first runners next year.

While our lineup is the same as 2015, the quality of our stallions has undoubtedly been raised and we are very happy to offer this superb group of stallions to our clients. We thank them for their support and look forward to an exciting year at the races in 2016.”

The 2016 fees for Darley’s stallions in Japan are as follows:

Admire Moon (End Sweep – My Katies (Sunday Silence)) - ¥2.0million

King’s Best (Kingmambo – Allegretta (Lombard)) - ¥2.5million

Monterosso (Dubawi – Porto Roca (Barathea)) - ¥1.5million

Pyro (Pulpit – Wild Vision (Wild Again)) - ¥2.0million

Furioso (Brian’s Time – Fursa (Mr Prospector)) - ¥0.5million

I looked at this in Japanese before I saw the translated release, and got a chuckle at Google's translation:
Notice of Darley stallion 2016 species with fee
Durley, we will provide the stallions of 5 cows in 2016 season.
Glad to see that Pyro is looking popular to Darley. I always like that son of Pulpit and hoped he'd be a good sire.

Just realized they will both stand in NY.

Would definitely send to Al Khali and get the same bloodline and hope for a filly. All those NY bred turf filly races...

Seriously. And heck, at $2,500, the resulting foal would almost earn out as a sporthorse prospect if they didn't make it on the track. Seems like a win/win for the riders among us. Now, to find a nice mare... :D
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on the horse!
Like to see some stuck-up jockey boy sittin' on Dan Patch? Make your blood boil? Well, I should say!
