2016 Stallion Fees

Spendthrift could repopulate a small country with the number of stallions they've got right now.

Yeah they had a roster this size in the 80s as well. Of course, the farm was under a different owner then. I wonder what their capacity is for stallions? How many breeding sheds do they have? Do they run 24 hours a day to accommodate all the breedings?

Hard Spun has been a successful sire, but I don't know that he's had enough sons head to the shed to indicate whether he's going to be a sire of sires.

I think this is his first son to go to stud. His top runners from earlier were fillies as I recall.

I was talking to someone about supposedly AP and Songbird being on the same plane and we had the silly convo about them meeting and a possible "romance" in the future. I then laughed and said he's not good enough for her. But that comment was right on target. He may be a TC winner and dual champion but that doesn't matter in the breeding shed. I wouldn't breed a top broodmare prospect to an unproven stallion.

I do wonder if they'll have as easy a time as they think getting mares to AP and POTN.

Give me Tapit, Empire Maker, Medaglia d'Oro instead. I'd also prefer Hard Spun, Curlin, Speightstown, Tiznow, Bernardini... And others. Proven, and at far more reasonable prices (even Tapit, who is proven to deserve his high fee).

Did anyone see the FT results? Breeders losing not just their shirts, but also their pants. Stud fees going up to really unreasonable fees in a lot of cases. Hang on... Another bumpy ride ahead.

At any point is your boss going to breed his elite racemares, or stick to racing focus and continue to monetize the top mares in November sales, ala HDG? Given his love for Tapits at the yearling sales, the final list of eligible bachelors is kinda short if she ultimately stays home and is bred, isn't it? (although I was impressed you included Bernardini on your personal semi-short list! I like the progress you're showing with finally recognizing him, as I'm a fan of his myself)

I mean... as far as unproven stallions go, I'd take Cairo Prince over American Pharoah because the damside pedigree is far more interesting and I'm not forking over whatever insane sum Coolmore/Ashford will be demanding for the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years. There are just too many alternative options right now with Empire Maker get and grandget and the Empire himself returning.

POTN's fee for next year is too high, but he got plenty of nice mares this year. I doubt Coolmore was really thinking Empire Maker would be back in KY for 2016 when they secured the breeding rights to Pharoah (sorry, there's only one AP and his last name is Indy), though. I wouldn't send a mare to Pharoah or POTN if Empire Maker was available at a similar fee.

No, he's not a fan of the breeding side of the business. It's slow, and you never know what you'll get. He feels he could breed for, say $300k, or buy for $300k, and his chances are far better buying that he'll have a nicely-conformed horse. It does make sense so I can't argue with it. The benefit of breeding is that you do know what issues the horse has had along the way where with one you buy you don't know necessarily if it's had corrective surgery or if they've done a great job at hiding bad feet or a bad mind.

I was more interested in seeing how much they continue to raise the fee of a stallion whose first crop has yet to race

For what it's worth, I went to see Cairo Prince on Friday, along with Haynesfield (holy crap I forgot he was such a tank). Anyway, I was impressed with Cairo Prince physically, and after talking to the stallion manager, I'm not that surprised they upped his fee. His book was oversubscribed, they limited it to 150 (he officially went to 148 mares). They're seeing the same sort of interest already, so they must feel it was worth a slight bump.

Fair enough! And yes it's true he is a huge (gorgeous) silver tank of a horse, but I'm curious to see how much he'll throw onto his offspring is what I meant! He sure does have a wonderful pedigree, so if I had a mare...

I meant Haynesfield is a tank. I didn't remember him looking like a QH, but he's got that butt

"Think about it!" is Airdrie's slogan/catchphrase. They use it in all of their ads.

Cairo Prince is pretty massive too though he does not look like a QH haha my bad. Funny how some of those studs do end up looking like big ol' QHs though once they put on a normal weight.

Oh, I didn't realize that. Thanks for the info! Though, my thoughts on it as a slogan still stand, so now I'm just sort of face palming over all of it.
