Race Day has a nice record, and it looks like he's is going to finish out the year with a GII race on the BC undercard. Good female family, as well.
I suspect a breeder would prefer a Tapit that is headed to the shed while still sound, over a china doll like Normandy Invasion.

You know, I get a lot of the criticism about this colt, but I don't get this one. We've had what I'd consider unsound horses in our barn, but Normandy wasn't one of them. It's not inherent unsoundness that caused him to be so light of weight going into the Derby, or caused the abscess he had, or caused the lung infection. He had a single bone issue in his career, but that puts him on par with, I don't know, 50-75% of horses who will certainly get a bone issue in their career (including those who are thought of as very sound runners). He didn't require special care or babying to keep his feet and legs in good shape.BaroqueAgain1 wrote:Race Day has a nice record, and it looks like he's is going to finish out the year with a GII race on the BC undercard. We recently retired what I'd consider an unsound horse. He constantly had feet issues, which constantly led to suspensory issues. He's been gelded and is going to his non-racing home this week, and I'm glad he won't be adding to the gene pool because I do believe his issues could've been passed on to his offspring.
I just think it's not accurate or fair to point to Normandy as "unsound" or a "china doll" when you look at what caused his training interruptions.

Thank you for the insight on NI, V.
I guess that having a sesamoid problem, followed by suspensory problems in the same foot, gave me the impression that he was, technically, unsound.

Unless you hadn't provided that info, what else are people supposed to think? That's not a knock on you. Those of use on the other side of the fence don't really know anything and it can't be held against us.Admin wrote:I just think it's not accurate or fair to point to Normandy as "unsound" or a "china doll" when you look at what caused his training interruptions.

V - as always, thank you for sharing the insight you have. It's really a shame we don't get this sort of information on the regular about many of the horses we see go out and many we see shelved for periods of time. The "how" and "why" are kept top secret, it seems. I know this is just the nature of the business, but I think so much respect for the horsemanship of trainers, riders and barn help is lost by not sharing these tidbits about the health and care that goes into these animals. We never learn until after the fact and that's a shame. I suppose it's because of the gambling aspect of the game.Admin wrote:You know, I get a lot of the criticism about this colt, but I don't get this one. Why would it be because of the gambling aspect? It's an insult to bettors they aren't provided with more robust information.
They're horses. It's horse racing. This is hardly the same thing as data hacking. I've never understood the secret nature of it all.

He does.
When you paper bag his neck, anyway. Yikes. Now he can come to America and get chunks.

Well, I don't know what else we could've done. We reported the cause of each setback on our website and Facebook pages, and I know the racing press reported what we did as I read many of those articles. Nothing was ever kept secret on Normandy.Somnambulist wrote:Unless you hadn't provided that info, what else are people supposed to think? That's not a knock on you. Sorry V, I wasn't trying to be a dick. I hate social media and don't really use any of it. I wouldn't know.Admin wrote:Well, I don't know what else we could've done. I didn't think you were, and I understand your frustration. I'm just equally frustrated because we were very open and it was all reported. We don't all read all the news, nor do we all remember all the news, so I do understand.Somnambulist wrote:
