Correcting myself, was a filly. But she was RNA (unsurprisingly). I was surprised by the lack of interest, I wonder what was wrong with her.

I just looked up the dam's pedigree wow!
http://www.pedigreequery.com/ask+me+no+secrets

Seattle Slew as a sire - dam sire is Secretariat and on the bottom she goes to Northern Dancer through Vice Regent as well as Buckpasser.

There must not be too many of these running around.
Not many remaining with those names close up, but it's a fairly common combination of lines.

I was curious so I dug up that filly's page: http://apps.keeneland.com/sales/Sep15/pdfs/774.pdf

I think part of the answer is the dam's produce record. She's had 7 foals of racing age, which is plenty of chances to come up with something. However, only 4 of them raced, only 2 of them won, and there aren't any stakes placings (or even dams of stakes placed) to speak of. The best foal they can mention has won the grand total of $27,133. (And he's by Tapit, so it's not like she hasn't had chances.) Basically it looks like her dam either isn't passing down any talent, or her foals have physical issues. She's nicely bred but isn't producing anything.

The filly's page looks to have plenty of black type, but on a closer look, very little of it is recent, and much of it is in lesser leagues. The dam's one impressive sibling won his black type in Dubai. The third dam has the best produce record on the page, so it looks a bit like this branch of the family is declining. I think there's enough pedigree there that if this filly was quite impressive-looking, she might have sold decently, but not enough to carry her if she doesn't look great or has medical issues.

That said, I'm not a bloodstock agent; I'm just taking my best guess :)
Totally missed somehow that you posted this and I posted almost the identical thing. ;)
Yours was more concise. I'm always rambling. :)

Treve, I find some of the yearlings that sell for way less than I think they should have 'deceptive' pages like that--you glance at them when the horse is in the ring and it looks long and with lots of blacktype, and it's only if you have time later to look more carefully that you realize it's not nearly as good as you first thought!

Random prettypony colour notes: I think 1018 may be an actual black, despite being listed as 'dark bay/brown.'

1064 is a grey with great big Tetrarch spots. Adorable.

(I'm at work and only watching with half an eye, so I may have missed other interesting ones. Lots of flashy chestnuts, though!)

Malibu Moon's babies don't look very popular these days. I remarked they tend to sold pretty low?
I believe Orb was his last Grade 1 winner? If so, that's 2 1/2 years sans Gr. 1 winners.....and he's stood for a good fee and seen very nice mares. If anything they should have continued to improve after Orb, but that's not the case.
His current top performer is a 3yr old Argentinian Grade 2 winner....

Seems to be going to way of Forestry....hot.....great auction sales.....then nadda....
Remember that mares bred to Malibu Moon after Orb would have foals born in 2015, not 2014.

This colt almost certainly had significant issues (or issues viewed to be significant to most vets working sales; rightly or wrongly) to have sold for that price, and he has the misfortune of being a colt (significantly less residual value if you can't get the horse to the track, and-- Derby winner notwithstanding-- the better Malibu Moons have been fillies).

I think the stallion will be fine, but I wouldn't be willing to dump anything into a colt with problems, either.

The Factor knows how to sire beautiful babies. All the foals I've seen from him so far are pretty.

My initial and immediate reaction is 'that's nonsense'.

I don't know what the logic is behind it. Maybe they figure if they can't get a good price on her they can always race her?

It's a bit weird seeing Brocklebank - notorious for buying them for cheap and pinhooking them for a lot more - is venturing into such an expensive pinhook....after what happened in Australia.
The purchaser referred to the filly as an *it*. You have to wonder about that whole scenario.

Yeah I caught that after. That is so far removed from my mentality I thought the "it" referred to the operation/project/group of yearlings... but then that doesn't make so much sense either :|

It may be an Australian thing, if the buyer is from there.
Every Aussie race I watch, the race callers refer to all the horses as "It." Males, females, it doesn't matter. I don't know if it's an expediency thing, because the races have mixed gender more often than we do here, plus they're trying to call huge fields.
Maybe the race callers just can't be bothered with memorizing which is which...or may it's a cultural thing, where all horses are unsentimentally referred to as "it?"

Is there a photo of her, perchance?
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on the horse!

First thing I've read that begins to shed some light on this.

Asked how long he had been in the racing business,
Dickman dead-panned, "Oh. A long time."
Before adding, "About a year."

Good luck Mr. Dickman. I sense your involvement may very well be shortlived.

Which actually makes me pretty angry. We need owners in the sport and this smacks of a new owner being taken advantage of. The number of horses sold for over $1m is miniscule, and this man needs this horse to make it to a sale and be SO darned impressive that he has to bring over $1.1m just to recoup his costs. I would've never advised him to make this purchase.

Completely agree. Might have been TWO fillies that sold for over $1 MM as a 2 yo this year I think, and one at OBS was by Tapit who was a $325,000 yearling. Another was a Smart Strike filly at FT May that had a super female family. Completely different risk profile for both relative to this hip.

Knowing next to nothing other than what I've read, I think he got taken advantage of, but he's a big boy. I suspect he has deep enough pockets that he won't be homeless anytime soon.

Racing's not like other enterprises though, with little governing the ethics of the sales, etc. Also, the valuation of horses is highly subjective. Being a big boy or girl or a rich boy or girl doesn't mean that they're fair game to be robbed. It makes me ill.

I'm not justifying anything, but there's a difference between allowing yourself to get taken advantage of, and getting robbed/scammed by agents and consignors (which I am in no way suggesting has happened here).

Someone on another group had mentioned it, but its interesting enough for discussion here.

Have a look at the glut of colts (24 or 25 I think it is now) puchased by Gary & Mary West. They buy under Ben Glass, Agent.

Hal Hatch has been busy picking up his newest pinhooking ventures, as well. I always like to see what he buys.
