Imported mares and their offspring in Japan

Teruya Yoshida, the boss of Shadai Farm, said in an interview with the racing media, just after the hugely successful Select Sale 2013:

'Our proceeds from the sale, as a natural course of events, will be spent for importing excellent mares from abroad. Then they will be bred to good stallions to produce good offspring. This virtuous cycle has made us what we are, and you see this by having a look at bunch of maresーmares with once unimaginable level of quality being in breeding sheds here in Japan.'

For his comment, all racing journalists there nodded like woodpeckers. But the strength of up&down-movement of their heads ends there; they in general don't trace imported mares and their offspring's racing careers. So even Japanese racing fans know little about them, except when they 'quietly' appear in races in the JRA.

This is a thread for improving this situation to share information about them with their fans abroad, and more...feel free to throw in whatever topics on them you'd like to talk about.

Pacific Gal, 2yo f, Zenno Rob Roy x Island Fashion(US), was entered in Fuyo Stakes (1600m open class) at Nakayama today, finishing 3rd (3rd fav).

(*) A mile race at Nakayama is well-known for its advantage of taking an inside position early because of the short straight with a tight turn. PG, having a disadvantage of starting from an outside stall, failed to do that although she showed a good final spurt.

In 1996, Saratoga Dew(USA) was sent to Japan to be a broodmare at Shinkoh Farm, Hokkaido, Japan.

When Saratoga Dew arrived in Japan, she was in foal to Storm Cat(USA).
Her first foal born in 1996 was a filly and named Lady Blossom(JPN).
Lady Blossom, smart sprint winner on either surface, retired to K.I. Farm with a record of 24-5-3-3 in JRA.

While Saratoga Dew has not produced any graded winner yet, Lady Blossom produced one of the best sprinters in Japan, if not the best, of all-time.
Lord Kanaloa(JPN), Lady Blossom's sixth foal colt by King Kamehameha(JPN), has won the G1 Sprinters Stakes back-to-back for five successive G1 win today. Many fans now believe that he is one of the world's best sprinters in training.

Thanks Saratoga Dew for coming all the way to Japan!!
I am looking forward to seeing her 2012 Harbinger colt's debut next year. But she is already a great broodmare for the Japanese racing.

Atom, a 2yo son of Shining Energy(USA), was 2nd in a G2 for 2yos, Daily Hai Nisai Stakes, at Kyoto on 5th Oct.

Mikki Isle out of Star Isle (IRE), Rock of Gibraltar x Isle de France, who was 2nd to Atom (half-length) in his debut, broke his maiden quite easily at Kyoto today, making a new JRA record of 1.32.3 for 2yos' 1600m(*). Even though a firm turf enabled him to do so, he looks like a good miler with a light turn of foot.

Like Shimokobe Farm, K.I.Farm is one of the breeding farms in Japan that are independent of SHADAI group.

Japanese champion sprinter Lord Kanaloa, Saratoga Dew's grandson, is bred by K.I. Farm.

A son of Princess Olivia (USA), Tosen Ra, won Mile Championship, a mile G1 at Kyoto, today. The 5yo half-brother to Flower Alley, the stallion standing at Three Chimmeys, was 2nd in 3200m Tenno Sho (G1) this spring, and yet this time his connections entered him in the 1600m race for the first time, a gamble to say the least because he was regarded as competitive in races of 2000-3000m.

That was an impressive win by Tosen Ra, and congrats to Yutake Take, who brought home his 100th G1 winner.
It's interesting to read about the pedigree connections between Flower Alley and Tosen Ra. It might help explain why the Japanese were so eager to buy Flower Alley's son, I'll Have Another, because they can see that family is very strong.
