Free as a Bird was second in the Smart N Fancy Stakes at Saratoga today. They went crazy fast and the winner set a new course record for the distance. 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:00.46....impressive.

Maftool failed by a half-length to catch the winner when finishing fast in the Group Two International Bosphorus Cup over a mile and a half on turf at Veliefendi, Turkey, on Sunday, September 6.

The three-year-old Hard Spun colt, partnered by Dane O'Neill, was held up in seventh place towards the outside in the nine-runner field. He moved up to sixth on the far side and made progress to go fifth turning in. Switched out wider with just over two furlongs remaining, Maftool found another horse in front of him and had to be moved wider still.

He flew home from fifth inside the final furlong to snatch second on the line in his first attempt at 12 furlongs, only just behind the winner Connecticut, whose time was 2m 29.45s on ground officially described as good.

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor commented: "Maftool has run well. "He is all right and I think a mile and half suits him. He will race in Dubai again."

article that includes Hard Spun and his 2 BC challenge race winners. In addition to these two, I imagine Hard Not To Like is eligible for the Filly and mare turf

Real shame, but at least it's not life threatening.

I am happy to see that Hard Spun has sired some long distance horses. When he was running some people said he couldn't get 10 furlongs because he never won at that distance. I disagreed because he ran so well in the KD and BCC. Just happened that he ran into two other really good horses that year who finished ahead of him in those races, but he managed to finish in front of each of them twice, so he did okay as far as I was concerned.

Island Town entered in $1,000,000 Pennsylvania Derby this coming Saturday at Parx. In with some very stiff competition in Frosted, Madefromlucky, etc. He drew #2 pp, same as his two stakes wins. Hoping that is a good omen!

2 yo filly Promising Run won the G2 Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket(GB) 9/25/2015

Run confirms promise in easy Rockfel win
By Jack Haynes 3:13PM 25 SEP 2015

Report: Newmarket, Friday

Shadwell Rockfel Stakes (Group 2) 7f, 2yo fillies only

PROMISING RUN (5-1) boosted her Qipco 1,000 Guineas credentials by denying Ryan Moore a winner on his second ride since returning from injury when landing the Group 2 prize at Newmarket.

Ridden prominently behind the pacesetter Flying Empress, James Doyle's mount found plenty for pressure to take the lead with a furlong to go and withhold the persistent challenge of the Moore mount Thetis (7-1), winning by a length and three quarters.

In a race run at a strong tempo, stamina was the key as Promising Run kept on willingly to the line to land the spoils, while Thetis travelled well until the furlong pole and looked set to give Moore his first success following a two-month absence, yet was unable to pass the winner.

Hugo Palmer's Hawksmoor, who was a well-supported favourite, struggled to make an impact before staying on well in the final furlong to secure third place.

This fillies' race has produced several leading contenders for the 1,000 Guineas, including 2006 winner Finsceal Beo, and Saeed Bin Suroor will be hopeful Promising Run, who is a general 25-1 shot for the Classic, can replicate previous trends next year.

Bin Suroor hinted at a potential return to Newmarket for Promising Run in a couple of weeks time for the Dubai Fillies' Mile.

"Promising Run did that nicely and I think that a mile will suit her. She could come back here for the Fillies' Mile in two weeks time," he said
