Camelot (Montjeu (IRE) - Tarfah, by Kingmambo)
Australia (Galileo (IRE) - Ouija Board (GB), by Cape Cross (IRE))
Galileo (Sadler's Wells - Urban Sea, by Miswaki). They didn't take him out of his stall for us, but he wanted to come out and say hi. He was quite friendly.

We also visited the Irish National Stud and the Curragh for the Irish Derby.

Arkle's skeleton at the Irish National Stud.
And getting a little further from the intent of this thread...while not quite a stallion, I thought I'd share a picture of the great jockey Lester Piggott signing a copy of the new book, The Irish Derby: Celebrating the 150th Running of Ireland's Greatest Race, at the Curragh.

I love the 2nd one of Exceed and Excel, quite lovely. And hamming it up for carrots, he knows how to work visitors doesn't he? I also like the one of Australia. He is a handsome fella.
How lucky you were to go visit these beautiful stud farms. Something I would love to do one day. Of course just getting over to Europe would be an accomplishment for me. Thanks for the great pictures.

Thanks for the photos, SC. They're all very nice...and I loved the shot of the great Lester Piggott.
However, I have to say that when I saw the hindquarters on Helmet, all I could think was, 'Quarterhorse breeders would LOVE to get their hands on a few straws from that little powerhouse!'

They must not have talked to Darley in KY, with their "Stay on the path! Don't get on the grass! See that speck over there in the corner of the paddock? That's Hard Spun. See that other speck? That over there is Medaglia d'Oro, and the tinier speck behind him is Street Sense."Sparrow Castle wrote:From our June 29, 2015, visit to the beautiful Darley Kildangan Stud in Ireland. Wow, I haven't had that kind of experience with Darly Ky either. Actually, the opposite. I thought they were one of the nicest experiences I've had, and I've been there a few times.BlindLucky wrote:They must not have talked to Darley in KY, with their "Stay on the path! Thanks, Calypso. Galileo really did want some attention. I understand why they didn't take him out but I don't think he did. What an honor to be in the presence of all this talent!Calypso wrote:Love the pics, Sparrow Castle! Camelot is a cutie, and Galileo has this look on his face like "Hey! What about me?!" <3

We had a private tour of Kildangan Stud and I asked specifically to see Exceed and Excel. He sure has a lot of personality and quite a looker. I'm really looking forward to seeing his filly with Black Caviar get to the races!Private Thoughts wrote:I love the 2nd one of Exceed and Excel, quite lovely. I was unexpectedly taken with Australia. He really is stunning in person. They call him the heir apparent to Galileo, and I sure hope it turns out that way. How could he not be, with Ouija Board as his dam, he's bound to pass on greatness.
It really was a fairy tale dream trip! I hope you get the opportunity to visit too. There's nothing like the hospitality and kindness we were shown everywhere we went in Ireland.

Haha, I agree, Helmet is a sturdy looking one. He was so funny, did his posing for us, but was not too happy about it. We got one photo where he's literally glaring at us, as if to say get it over with already. He was okay with the loving on him, just not the posing for seemingly endless pictures.BaroqueAgain1 wrote:Thanks for the photos, SC. Glad you liked the photo of Lester. What a surprise when I went to the kiosk to buy the book and there he was. He really didn't sign very many before he mumbled and walked away. He was exactly how I would expect him to be, having read "Lester: Return of a Legend."

Oh my, sounds like maybe you caught them on a bad day? I'm really looking forward to visiting both Darley and Coolmore studs next time we're in Kentucky. I certainly can't expect the same rock-star type experience we had in Ireland but I'd hope to really see the great studs there.BlindLucky wrote:They must not have talked to Darley in KY, with their "Stay on the path! They're very nice at Darley, but the two recent tours I've been on have both been the same: walk on the path between paddocks, don't get into the grass and go near the fences, and you can only see what you can see of the horses in the paddocks between the fence rails--no getting up near the fence to put a lens over the top planks or anything. You won't see them up close or anything, you won't see them in the barns/stalls or taken out for viewing like they do at places like WinStar, but at least you know they get a good bit of turn-out timeSparrow Castle wrote:Oh my, sounds like maybe you caught them on a bad day? Yeah, the folks at Ashford were borderline spiteful.sweettalk wrote:while i had nothing but great darley visits, i can say the exact opposite about coolmore. hope they get more friendly when AP arrives - they'll need to do it quick.

on groom there, maybe the stallion manager and not a groom? he was giving the tour, and said that he was finally getting a vacation and, in a rather nasty tone, added that he hoped he didn't see a single horse in that time. even if he felt that way, that was... probably not the best thing to say.BlindLucky wrote:Yeah, the folks at Ashford were borderline spiteful.sweettalk wrote:while i had nothing but great darley visits, i can say the exact opposite about coolmore. hope they get more friendly when AP arrives - they'll need to do it quick.

Maybe that groom/stallion manager had been having to deal with one or more of Coolmore's more...um...challenging studs? Scat Daddy, I hear, is a real people-eater.

Scat Daddy eating people? or the stallion manager

There are other things that I could do, but there's really nothing that I love as much as horse racing. Chantal Sutherland
