SHOTGUN KOWBOY IMPRESSES IN RETURN FROM LONG LAYOFF
For Immediate Release
Saturday, August 29, 2015
OKLAHOMA CITY – The last time Shotgun Kowboy competed, he came up second beaten just a head by Bayerd in Remington Park’s richest 2-year-old race, the 2014 Springboard Mile. Shotgun Kowboy ended an 8-1/2 month layoff in a huge way on Saturday night, rollicking to win by 11-1/4 lengths in a $49,089 allowance for Oklahoma-bred 3-year-olds.
Owned, trained and bred in Edmond, Okla. by C.R. Trout, Shotgun Kowboy handled the 6-1/2 furlongs in 1:16.56 over a fast track. After breaking well under jockey Luis Quinonez, Shotgun Kowboy was angled to the outside moving up the backstretch to stay clear of traffic. He was third, a length back of the pace-setting Perfect Majestic with Okey Dokey Kyle only a head back in second. As the field of seven moved to the turn, Quinonez began to advance Shotgun Kowboy.
Leaving the lone turn, Shotgun Kowboy had his nose on the lead and began to open up over his foes, eventually leaving them all behind with ease. Perfect Majestic held on for a distant second while Kenny Do The Math charged up to gain third.
The heavy wagering favorite at 1-5 odds, Shotgun Kowboy paid $2.40 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. Perfect Majestic paid $5.60 to place and $3.80 to show. Kenny Do The Math paid $5.60 to show.
The allowance served as a prep race for the $50,000 Tishomingo Stakes for Oklahoma-bred 3-year-olds on Sept. 18. However, Shotgun Kowboy’s impressive comeback has given Trout a decision to make as the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby looms on Sept. 27.
“We’ll see how he comes out of it tomorrow,” Trout said. “Barring anything unforeseen, we’ll probably point for the derby. He was off a long time and needed rest to get over some little things. He showed us tonight that he may deserve an opportunity for the derby, at least that’s the plan right now.”
Shotgun Kowboy won his fourth race from six starts, all at Remington Park. The winner’s share of $28,293 runs his career earnings to $229,994. Shotgun Kowboy is a gelding by Kodiak Kowboy from the Siphon (Brz) mare Shotgun Jane.

Shotgun Kowboy
A standout as a 2-year-old at Remington Park in 2014, Shotgun Kowboy finished second in the richest local race for those in their first year of competition, the $250,000 Springboard Mile. He was just a head behind the winner Bayerd in Springboard, leaving owner, trainer and breeder C.R. Trout hopeful of a big 3-year-old campaign. However, those dreams were dashed when the gelding developed a minor issue and a small bout with colic.
Time and proper attention helped Shotgun Kowboy get back to action on Aug. 29 when he lit up Oklahoma-bred allowance foes in a race for 3-year-olds at 6-1/2 furlongs, winning by an easy 11-1/4 lengths. Shotgun Kowboy remains on the derby path according to Trout.
“He’s been fine since his comeback. He’s eating well and came out of the race like a bear,” Trout said. “We have two workouts planned for him before the Derby and we think he’ll be ready.”
The 1-1/8 miles Oklahoma Derby is the headline race of seven stakes events on Sept. 27 that will total more than $1,000,000 in purse money. Also included are the $200,000 Remington Park Oaks, the $150,000 Remington Park Sprint Cup, the $100,000 Remington Green Stakes and the $75,000 Kip Deville Stakes, among others. The Kip Deville begins the series of 2-year-old stakes races that culminate in the Springboard Mile in December. The first race on Oklahoma Derby Sunday is 1:30pm.
