I'm going to start our 2023 Retirement thread with the news that Frankie Dettori has announced that he will retire at the end of 2023.

I will really miss watching Frankie ride, and his exuberance.

Duke of Firenze has been retired at 14 following a 134-race career.

per his trainer David Griffiths:
"He could go to one of the racing colleges and teach the kids a few things, he's a bit of a handful on the gallops but he's good in the stalls and he's a name. Another option is becoming an equine therapy horse, going to hospitals and schools – he's so chilled out he could be good for that. Whatever happens, he'll always have a home here with us. He's given us some great days out and he deserves a good retirement."

That is an interesting purchase by Shadai. While HRC does not have turf credentials, Japanese breeders haven't felt that disqualifies a horse from being a successful stallion for their mostly-grass racing program. The success of American 'dirt' sires, from Sunday Silence to Drefong and Mind Your Biscuits, appears to show that they aren't wrong.
Good luck to 'Charlie.

3x G1 winner Hitotsu (Maurice - Love Is Fickle) has been retired. He won the Australia Derby, Victoria Derby, and Australia Guineas.

He sustained a cut to his leg, which became infected, and was never able to get back to the races.
