Unfortunately the first day of the new year in New Zealand was marred by the breakdown of fan favourite Gold Watch in his first attempt at a stakes race. The horse had 6 wins from 7 starts and was the only horse in training for 90 year old trainer Cliff Goss.
Stewards report (released as always a few hours after the final race) states the horse ambulance was deployed but it was decided it was kinder to humanely euthanise him as it was a compund fracture to his right pastern.

This is a tough one: the KY Horse Park has announced that Da Hoss passed on Jan 2. He was 30.

R.I.P. Wagnerian.
He gave jockey Yuichi Fukunaga his first Derby win, too.

That horrible news hit me hard when I first opened one of my racing sites this morning.
Such a tremendous racehorse...and her pedigree can never be reproduced now.
This has to be a hard thing for the Coolmore staff to deal with - to first lose Santa Barbara to a pelvic injury, and now Snowfall to the same sort of injury is the cruelest of coincidences.

The closest they could get to replicating Snowfall is a son of Deep Impact, or by throwing a bone to Black Tide.

Essayons (Deputy Minister x Strategic Maneuver, by Cryptoclearance) died in Uruguay at age 23 this week. The article makes it sound like he was a decent sire there.

Sad. I really liked his mom, I'll always remember this Barbara Livingston photo of her. Glad I could find it, the looks on the guys' faces at the picnic table is perfect.

Miss Fortunate (Deputy Minister - Fantastic Ways, by Secretariat) died on January 20th. She hadn't been bred since she produced her last foal in 2014 and was clearly adored by her connections. This post is by a former worker at Summer Wind, whom she was owned by. Jane Lyon also commented and said how everyone loved the mare.
