Exercise rider Arturo Mares died yesterday following injuries sustained in a fall from a horse on 1/27.
Arturo Mares, a Southern California-based exercise rider, died Thursday of complications from injuries sustained while exercising a horse Jan. 27 at Santa Anita, according to his son, Israel Mares.

Arturo Mares was unseated when his mount stumbled while jogging, trainer Hector Palma said last weekend.

Mares sustained severe neck and head injuries in the accident, according to his son. Mares was treated by paramedics on the track before he was transported to nearby Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Mares’ condition deteriorated late Wednesday and early Thursday before his passing, Israel Mares said.

“He had fractured his neck,” Israel Mares said. “He had a really bad brain injury. He was starting to have complications on top of the brain injury.”

Israel Mares said his father had lost movement in his arms and legs.

Arturo Mares was born in Mexico City in 1959. He turned 65 on Monday, his son said.

I wonder if that laminitis developed due to that initial injury

I think the article mentions founder developing on the leg opposite the initial injury. Not unusual for laminitis to occur in the leg having to take on extra weight because the other limb is compromised.

G1SW Papineau, 24yo g (Singspiel - Early Rising, by Grey Dawn) had to be euthanized due to heart issues. A winner of 5 of 9 starts, his biggest win came in the G1 Ascot Gold Cup in 2004. Though to be honest, the article shows he might have accomplished more after his racing career was over. It was really interesting to read what he did while in Godolphin's Lifetime Care program.

Really awful two days at Musselburgh (UK). Yesterday Holmes St George (FR) fell and sustained a fatal injury and today two horses brokedown catastrophically on the flat, Absolute Notions (IRE) and Getagin (IRE).

Getagin was about to win when he brokedown and fell several strides from the line, luckily someone got to him straight away but seeing him trying and stand up again was horrible :(

i just saw a forum post saying Getagin's dam has had 5 foals who never raced, and then he was her 3rd produce to fatally break down (from 5 to race — and from the other 2, one seems to be a [bad] bleeder and the other was a PU/DNF in his last start ½ a year ago). :? surely something amiss with her progeny overall, right?

Feel really bad for him, he loved that mare. I've stumbled across his posts of her before. She was only 5 and stabled at Belmont. Though her barn listed as 62 would be really far from the EHV quarantined barn 15, its very worrisome. I know they'll do a necropsy. I'm not sure if EHV can cause sudden death, I would imagine they would have to report a sick horse immediately and the guy's post didn't make it sound like she was sick.

EHV-1 can cause sudden death in horses but if I remember correctly from university it’s a rare complication as most horses show the lethargy, nasal discharge etc and make a full recovery.
