Whats the point of entering the sale and then not going? Or if they are there stressing the horse out with traveling only not to sell it

She only has had 3 foals to race so I would say easily. But it would all come down to, does he vet clean and look good. Cause as we saw with Leslie's Lady's 2017 MDO colt, if they don't look good and vet well, they don't get bid on. But if they leave him in the sale and if he ticks all the boxes, I would imagine he goes for at least 3 or 4m.

Justahorse wrote: Thu Jul 13, 2023 4:57 pm Whats the point of entering the sale and then not going? Or if they are there stressing the horse out with traveling only not to sell it
They have to enter way in advance. Sometimes they have a change of heart, the yearling is in a weird growth spurt, or could even suffer an injury, so they pull them from the sale without ever sending them to the sale. He could already be an out, they don't release the outs list until closer to the sale. It could be they want to stay in on him too but want to make some money and spread the risk out. So they'll enter him and then let prospective buyers know they would like to retain part ownership. That happens a lot.

Yea but if they pull him while he's there that's just strange to me

They have a video about how they are offering him https://vimeo.com/844283785

The article is in Friday's TDN Daily and they say they are going to try to follow Stonestreet's business model. They can keep some to race but they can't keep all the best for themselves, they have to sell some of the best too.
https://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/p ... 230714.pdf

They said her unnamed 2yo filly by Bolt d'Oro, at this point, looks to be her best. But hey we will see, I think a lot of people like to talk up their unraced 2yos and you'd definitely want to say it if you are planning to sell the yearling 1/2 brother.

They sometimes do that if a horse is not getting enough looks, the "right" people aren't looking or don't like the horse when they do look, if people look but don't vet or anything like that. Sometimes they injure themselves after arriving at the sales grounds. Running a horse through the ring and having the bidding not go well can devalue the horse if they want to offer it again later.

Unless it's one of Mandy Pope's, who I think she sometimes enters just for the attention, most sellers do not send their horse to the sale unless they really intend to sell it (at what they believe is a fair price). If the horse is an out after it's already on the grounds, it's usually for a good reason.

Beholder is a sister to the best stallion (Into Mischief) and the colt is by the 2nd best stallion (Curlin), so if that colt looks good, why not try and sell him?
She’s thrown a runner, and she’s still young. She’s not a dud.

Yeah, unless the colt has a glaring flaw or doesn't vet (in which case I would be surprised Spendthrift is offering him for sale), I would expect him to make at least $1,500,000. Beholder only has three foals of racing age, one of which is a recent graded stakes winner, so her "record as a broodmare" is good. Of the Champion mares of the 21st century, how many besides Rachel produced a graded winner? I'm talking any dirt mare that's won an Eclipse. If I didn't have an early wakeup tomorrow I'd look into it right now, but I can't think of many off the top of my head.

Close Hatches produced Tacitus. His full sister Scylla looks like she has the potential to be a graded winner, but they seem to be bringing her along slowly. So she's obviously not there yet. That's the only one I can come up with.

If you want to go back a little more, Dubai Majesty has 2 G1 winners in Japan, Al Ain and Shahryar. And Stacelita had Soul Stirring. A little farther back, Goldikova produced 2 group winners, Goldistyle and Terrakova. Ginger Punch had Rouge Buck. Back even more, you have Ouija Board, who produced Australia.

Bottom line, the only 2 Eclipse winning females within the last 10 years who've had graded winners, as far as I can tell, are Close Hatches and Beholder.

Given that he has two hot 2yos in Europe (City of Troy and and Ramatuelle) and two recent G1 winners in the U.S., how well do you think Justify do at this year’s yearling sales?

I would guess they bring good prices. I just looked at the ones that have photos and they are all good looking, hip #5 has a skinny neck that makes him look weird. My favorite two were #6 and #103. But don't know what their x-rays say, only one doesn't have pics. I don't think any of them will be the sales topper. That is definitely going to Beholder's colt if he vets clean and he appears to have straight legs. But out of the Justify's with pictures, I really liked the #6, there was something about him that made me stop and say wow that is a nice yearling.

I did like Rachel's Valentina's colt too but I also didn't go through a ton of videos/pics looking at all the horses in the sale. Maybe there are others who stand out.
