Stallions who went to stud with only a win or placed in grade 3 stakes

I'm trying to think of stallions who are currently standing at stud or who stood at stud in the past who have never won or placed in grade 2 or grade 1 stakes. I'm specifically looking at stallions who went to stud with wins or placings in grade 3 stakes races. I know they're obviously out there but I'm having a hard time thinking of any currently. Anyone know of any?

I’m pretty sure I know why you’re asking this.

Anyway, a cursory look at the top 75 or so sires on blood horse will give you Flatter(placed in G2only), Temple City(won one G3, placed in 3 other GS) and Speightster(won one G3).

If you expand to G2(the line between G2 and G3 is thin) then you get War Front, Upstart, Laoban and Cairo Prince.

Star Guitar comes immediately to mind.

Macleans Music and Jess's Dream also come to mind.
I think Union Jackson would also qualify, I'm pretty sure his stakes wins were ungraded.

In War Front's defense, he won a G2 and was also second in 2 G1s (Vosburgh and Forego).

Half Ours, the dominant sire in Louisiana, won one G2.

Catalina Cruiser as well. Only ever won G3s and G2s and was unplaced in his two attempts at a G1, both in the Breeders Cup.

I mentioned Smokem in my response to another thread, but he would certainly qualify here. In five career starts he won one race and placed second in four other minor stakes.

He’s second on the Bloodhorse First Year Sires list, below Bolt d’Oro and above Justify.

In addition to the aforementioned horses on the current general sires list, Not This Time was a G3W (placed in his one start at the G1 level); if you expand to G2s, Kantharos was a G2W and never got to start in a G1.

Malibu Moon never started in a stakes race.

Jump Start won the G2 Saratoga Special and placed in a G1 at two before retiring due to injury.

He was a highly successful regional sire, with several progeny who were successful at the top level nationally. Prayer for Relief comes to mind. He also shuttled and has had success as a damsire.

More often than not the stallions who only won low level races or were unrated who became successful had famous families that warranted the chance they got.

^^^ Thanks for sparking some thoughts on regional stallions. Off the top of my head, you have to have Not For Love (SP) and Freud (G2P, I believe) high on that list. Both dominant in their respective states of Maryland and New York, with some national-level impact.

Khozan, who never started in a stakes, has emerged as a nice stallion for Florida.

Jump Start was amazing ...he suffered a condylar fracture in the BC and apparently had twenty screws inserted. What a good sire he turned out to be - and he died fairly young, like too many of Indy’s sons. Thank you for reminding me of him ...

Unraced Fiber Sonde has sat atop the WV sire list for several years now and is still probably the best bargain stallion in the country at $1000.

Lucky Pulpit only won one listed stakes and at best placed in the Gr. II Santa Catalina.

The very pretty Fiber Sonde is a sibling to Speightstown and Irap IIRC.

I wish Irap hadn't died.

Weigelia (who has a very "what" pedigree) won a couple G3 and some upgraded stakes. He has been a very dominant sire in his region. He will definitely get you a runner. He's a bit different though because I think he ran like 40 times.

He's not at stud anymore, but Curlin to Mischief never raced and apparently got a chance at stud simply on his pedigree.

If you are specifically looking for stallions who did not win or place in a G1 or G2, in California alone there are:
Mr. Big, Cyclotron, Unionize, Many Rivers, Phantom Wildcat, Boat Trip, Fullbridled, Gig Harbor, Tannersmyman, Run Brother Ron, Gem Heist, Lightnin N Thunder, Street George, Unusual Heatwave, Treasure Ride, City Wolf, Coach Bob, Heaven's Glory, Awesome Gambler, World Renowned, Fighting Hussar, Brave Cat, Box Score, Angus, Hoorayforhollywood, Northern Indy, Mesa Thunder, Bedford Falls, Faversham, Point Encounter, Reagan Republican, Grace Upon Grace, Sundarban, Pontiff, Prince of Love, Run It, Onebadshark, King of Jazz, Hidden Blessing, Misty'sgoldentouch, Allaboutdreams, Fontanella, Smoken, Phantom Boss, Rumpus Cat, Sparticle, G. G. Ryder, Dosificado, Richmond Street.

The ones with specifically G3 placings or winnings (but no G1/G2) are: Dosificado, G. G. Ryder, Phantom Boss, Run It, Northern Indy, Boat Trip, City Wolf.

Oregon: Sixthirteen, Understatement, Dynamic Impact. The later two specifically have G3 placings but no G2/G1 placings.

Washington: Gallant Son, Linchpin, War Power, Gold Aly, Private Gold, Houseofroyalhearts, Raise the Bluff, Demon Warlock, Rallying Cry.
Gallant Son, Private Gold, Raise the Bluff, Demon Warlock, and Rallying Cry all specifically have G3 placings but not G2/G1.

Basically the answer to your question is... lots. There are a A LOT of stallions out there with no Grade 1 or Grade 2 placings.

As far as stallions in the past, Danzig.

azeri2000: "Khozan, who never started in a stakes, has emerged as a nice stallion for Florida."

I really hope Khozan excels as a stallion, and not just in Florida. He may be the only hope for the wonderful-but-star-crossed Delta Princess's lineage.
