Laoban

You think this son of Uncle Mo will stay in NY after he just had a great weekend? Sires the winner of the Gr 1 Alcibiades stakes, another winner at Keeneland, and one of his colts just finished second in the Breeders’ Futurity. Or do you think stud farms will wait and see before making an offer?

I think a lot will depend on how Laoban's runners fare in the Breeders' Cup.

Wish it wasn’t WinStar.

Do you think they are relocating him too soon? And I wish he'd gone to another farm besides WinStar. I don't want them selling him overseas after one season because he hasn't met their expectations

Yea I was hoping it was Three Chimneys because I heard they were in the running for him. Becky Thomas is partnering with WinStar so it seems she still owns part of him so if it doesn’t work out, I wouldn’t be surprised if he just goes back to NY. I think with Uncle Mo and his sons doing well right now, Winstar is hoping the momentum continues with Laoban.

Winstar set his fee at $25,000, up from $5,000. Whatever they're smoking, they need to share.

And it will go up if his offspring do well in the Breeders’ Cup lol

You could send 3 mares to him (currently sitting #5 on the 1st crop sire list), or one to Nyquist (also an Uncle Mo, sitting 2nd)....

My friend is ecstatic about him doing so well because she bred her Honor Code mare to him for a foal next year. That risk she took definitely was a smart move! The resulting foal comes from the same cross that’s been working well with Uncle Mo sons.

Most years I would agree with you and not second guess their logic, but almost everyone is dropping fees so a 5x increase seems, uh, overly ambitious. Especially with other solid (or at least solid-ish) stallions on their roster for much less.

Had another stakes winner yesterday, which moved him back to fourth in the first crop sires list.

She bred a 3 year old ? Was the filly injured and unable to race? What’s the filly’s name?

Thanks

The farm I work at gave her away to my friend because she doesn’t have good conformation and they didn’t think she was good enough for their broodmare band. My friend plans on doing screws on the foal if it needs it because the mare should have gotten screws when she was a foal. Her name is Carol’s Dream

Oh, good for your friend - Carol’s Dream is in good hands! Aww, the poor thing...her foal will get better treatment than she did. That’s a lovely cross - I hope it will work as well as Mo over Bernardini!

Oh she definitely gets spoiled with daily grooms and lots of treats! I’m hoping it works out too since the Mo and AP line works very well together like you said.

Yay, I’m so glad to hear that! Your friend got in on the ground floor - good luck to her; I can’t wait to hear about the foal !
