This is a thread on this one specific article moreso than Chromes overall sale...I'm glad they released an article detailing the thought process behind it. I'm hoping it'll somewhat silence the Chromies I still see sqwaking on fb

I have always wondered about the whole idea of the better studs should have a homogeneous look to their offspring. I sometimes wonder if it is a more modern take on things when it seems most Euro stallions have several strains of Northern Dancer and most American stallions have several strains of Mr. P and/or API and ND.
While I realize people certainly think they mean the full phenotype, not just the color, it is still a lot easier in everyone's mind to think horses of similar color look more similar. This automatically gives bays/browns and grays the advantage as those colors/mutations are dominant. Man O' War was a great stallion, but many of his best racers absolutely took after the female family and his continuing sireline is due to In Reality who really looks nothing like him, despite being inbred to War Relic with another strain of Fair Play also present via Discovery.

I also find it humorous that at the same time they are calling him out for not stamping his foals, they are also criticizing him for giving them his conformation.

Unless you are one of the people on facebook calling Taylor Made traitors or greedy jerks and saying that Chrome is going to be sent to slaughter if he flops as a stallion, I don't see the need to take offence. The ones who complained the loudest about it are not genuine fans of the sport and are ignorant by choice.

I found the whole article pointless, its all common sense. I guess they had to write it for people who don't really follow horse racing. The article could have just been one line, "California Chrome was sold to Japan because horse racing is a business."

If true, it's a legitimate criticism. These two things are not mutually exclusive.

The odd thing is that a large number of Chrome's foals do look like him. For example, Art Sherman bred his bay mare (not fashionably bred) to Chrome and got a Chrome mini-me. And Chrome's conformation is not as horrible as some here would like folks to believe. Why not mention his really good points? He is an incredibly athletic horse. Remember his amazing, almost imperceptible flying lead changes? Remember how he won the Dubai World Cup going away in record time with his saddle slipped almost to bucking strap territory? Remember his gorgeous stride? His magnificent shoulder and amazing rear drive and extension? Perfection does not exist in this world (with the possible exception of snowflakes), but Chrome had the biomechanics to put a great racing career together.

We purchased 4 California Chrome yearlings in 2019 and all have developed and changed the right way so far. Excellent movers with athletic big strides. Pictured left to right by dams name: Edit ($230k), Journey On ($50k), Magnificent Song ($175k), Sky Glow ($90k). Exciting!

These kiddos all seem a tad butt high but I suppose they're in an awkward stage.

Grey one has a lovely coat and the next-to-last one already looks pretty solid.

I wouldn't be quite as concerned about the butt-high as I would that three of them seem to have somewhat dippy backs...?

Well it might be the dippy backs that make them look butt high.

Of course I could say that "dippy", long back is a common trait of the Seattle Slew/ AP Indy line, but then that would mean Chrome actually might have stamped some foals.

The first one though, the grey - s/he is butt high a bit yes, but the dip doesn't seem to be as pronounced as the others. Are the photos from them closer to yearling age, or closer to two?

I dunno, it's always hard to judge until they get some work & muscle development, some always look so awkward.

I wonder what their sales/prep photos looked like.
