Why isn't Mr. Speaker on the list? I guess he was sold at some point? He has an export on file but no return.
But he is still listed at Lane's End for 2018. I thought stallions at Lane's End didn't shuttle?
Vineyard Haven appears to have been sent somewhere too as he has an export but no return and doesn't have a report of mares bred for 2017.

Mr Speaker shuttled to South America last year and supposedly returned. He was on Lane's End's roster for 2017. They have shuttled other stallions (like The Factor, most recently). Mr Speaker may possibly be at Haras Cordillera in Chile again this SH season. He is on their website, although that doesn't always mean anything. El Turf's stallion directory shows him there and that would be more reliable. It is odd he isn't in the RMB. I noticed that, too. Hopefully it's just a glitch.

I could see a stallion getting missed on the RMB list but combining that and that he doesn't have a Return, he never came back to the US.

It is extremely odd that they never took him off their roster. He is on the 2018 roster, too. Perhaps the most likely explanation is that he was unable to return from Chile for 2017 due to a health concern, so he remained there, but will be coming back to KY after the 2017 SH season?

Yes that would be most likely. Most farms put out press releases when a stallion misses the season. I thought maybe there was an article that I missed because I haven't been following racing as closely this year.

Hat Trick (JPN) 19
He's standing in the wrong country, wish people would give him a second look given how his son Darbisim is doing well, and if I am not mistaken a few of Hat Trick's current runners did not too bad this year outside of Japan.

Mr Speaker did not pass quarantine and was sent back to South America. He should be back next season.

Thanks. Curious as to why there was apparently no announcement.

I’m curious too. I wish I remember what he had, but I can’t remember.

What would cause a horse not to pass quarantine- picked up some type of bug?

I guess the novelty of having a Giant's Causeway worth off. Only 31 mares this year?

Pretty sure he had some sort of virus when he arrived for quarantine, but I can't remember what it was.

They are trying to limit him as much as they can since he's getting up there in age and he's also a very slow breeder. The farm I work at tried to breed a mare to him and they suggested sending her to Pharoah instead,

Wow Effinex got a lot of mares. At least he'll have a good number of runners to carry on his legacy.
Corinthian only bred 9, no wonder they're sending him to Turkey next year.
The "I Didn't Know They Were Still Around" award goes to Captain Bodgit and Formal Gold.

I went on a tour at Ashford in August and they mentioned that they have been cutting his book back because of his age and his physical condition. It was the off season but his hind legs were wrapped, so probably just some wear and tear. I mean, for numerous years he covered 200+ mares.

DRF article:
Number of Mares Bred Declines; Into Mischief Top-Covering Stallion
For the third consecutive year, and for the 11th time in 12 years, the number of reported mares bred (RMB) in North America has declined, according to year-to-date statistics through Oct. 17 released by The Jockey Club Wednesday.
The 31,863 covers reported thus far in 2017 represent a drop of 5.6% from the 33,746 RMBs received through the same calendar date last year.
For a broader historical perspective, using statistics contained in The Jockey Club’s online fact book, the number of mares bred is now nearly half of what the year-end report was for 1991 (the oldest date for which The Jockey Club has published online statistics), when 63,479 mares were bred.
The number of active stallions on the continent continues to fall, having dropped in every single year since at least 1991, according to the online fact book.
To date for 2017, 1,342 stallions have been reported active, versus 1,423 reported at this time in 2016 (-5.7%).
In 1991, The Jockey Club reported 6,696 active stallions, nearly five times the current number.
The number of North American stallions covering 100 or more mares has also continued to decrease (105 in 2015; 100 in 2016; 91 in 2017).

Thanks for posting this news. The statistics are so interesting. Through October 17, 2017, The Jockey Club reports that 1,342 stallions covered 31,863 mares in North America during 2017. In round numbers, 5% of stallions had a book size of greater than 125 mares, and that group of stallions covered 30% of mares bred. Put it another way, 95% of all active Thoroughbred stallions in North America attracted only 60% of available mares.
Makes me ponder the mysteries of the unknown and unknowable what ifs.

Not an ideal scenario for the gene pool.
