For all of you who defend So Korean Racing, here is a quote to give you the gist.

"From the government’s point of view, the horse meat industry is a niche market that can grow fast and bring extra revenue to horse breeders.

“The horse meat industry can become a potential blue ocean, which might be able to revive the domestic rural economy,” a spokesman for Korea Racing Authority (KRA) said.

“The most important thing at this moment is to increase the supply of horse meat.”

Slaughter happens in North America too.
And, no, I don't agree with any of it.

But, what do we do with all of these unwanted horses? Set them free?

I personally would never eat horse meat, but as Izvestia said, it's not like none of this happens in the US, Canada, England, France, Germany, Japan, etc.

You also took the whole “The most important thing at this moment is to increase the supply of horse meat” thing way out of context based on the article. It looks like people want to breed more horses in order to sell them for slaughter, not buy up all the Thoroughbreds and slaughter them. Are some racehorses going to be slaughtered? Sure, they are everywhere in the world. But what I gathered from this article is that people are going to start breeding horses specifically for consumption.

Well, the article says 1,000 horses were slaughtered last year. And:
Nearly 85 percent of the horses are raised and slaughtered on Jeju Island where you can find more than 50 restaurants specializing in horse meat cuisine.
So it doesn't sound like they're eating pleasure mounts or race horses , but are raising them like cattle--for consumption. It's a disgusting thought to me, but their culture is also very different than ours.

Tired of you always acting like the US doesn't do bad things to horses. Sure we don't have slaughter facilities here but we let them be shipped hundreds of miles in inhumane conditions to be killed. A thoroughbred in Canada probably has a better chance of being slaughtered than on in Korea.
Slaughter is also common place in pretty much every country that races horses.
