Great read. If I could add one other piece of interesting pedigree theory regarding Numbered Account and California Chrome, it would be the "X-factor" theory. I know some don't believe in it, but consider this.

The theory states that it should pass in a "zig zag" from sire to daughter and daughter to son.
Mares who get the gene from both parents are "double copy" mares. Numbered Account is one such mare.

She would have passed the gene to her son, Polish Numbers.
He would have passed the only X he could, the large heart X, to his daughter, Chase it Down.

Natalma was a double copy mare, and passed the gene to her son Northern Dancer
Northern Dancer then bred double copy mare Numbered Account. That mating produced probably double copy mare Dance Number
Dance Number produced Not For Love.

So, there is a chance that the X carried by California Chrome is the large heart X.

It could also explain how he finished the Derby and (according to the outrider who brought him in) wasn't quartered up. It didn't take that much out of him.

This is, of course, all speculation, but it does make his pedigree just a little more interesting!
