He has a very strong backing too with quite a few of the NY farms sharing ownership. Here is the article: https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing ... n-new-york

So you all remember how Slumber used to stand at Calumet but then Sol Kumin bought him and moved him to Rockridge in NY? Want to know how much Calumet sold him for? How about $1.

That's a gift, with the $1 price to make the ownership transfer official. Possibly tax advantages for Calumet, too, but others probably have more knowledge on that aspect.Flanders wrote: ↑Fri Dec 23, 2022 2:06 am So you all remember how Slumber used to stand at Calumet but then Sol Kumin bought him and moved him to Rockridge in NY? i had never heard of this does anyone know why their breeding industry works like that?"In India, stallions cover only their owner's horses and he started with books of fewer than 10, but kept picking up and picking up to compete with some of the biggest studs that have been operating in the country.

So if I wanted to be a breeder in India, I would have to own my own stallion or have one in a partnership? What if I bought a pregnant mare from another country and imported her?

I would imagine that is just how it was always been done and the tradition kept on. Maybe it started that way because the stud farms were far away from each other and they bred for the races at the local tracks? Either way, I find it very interesting. If someone wants a foal by your stallion, they have to buy one from you. So if you get a phenomenal stallion, it could be a great financially. But it also keep stallions from having huge books. I was looking at the #1 ranked stud farm in India and they have lots of information.
https://ushastud.com/ -- FYI in advance, they play music on all the pages.... which I'm not a fan of but you can shut it off if you can find the player on each page.
The interview on their youtube page is also good.
Also are all/most of the stakes races in the country considered Classic Races??? That farm says they bred 372 Classic winners since the early 1970s.

here in brazil we have many stakes races called "classic ..." and tbh i never understood the use of the terminology. i believe it usually doesn't mean the same as an american classic because many of these races aren't of too much importance. so i'm guessing the same applies to these races in india? it's just... a term? like not an actual "classic" like you would see in the usa. just to give you an idea, check this out - all "classic" races held at the gávea racetrack (click an individual year to download the pdf). the most important ones are the ones named "grande prêmio" something. i would have to find and check the indian racing database to see if perhaps they have something like this set up.

A bit surprised, as he has a good flagbearer this hear in Tenebrism. Guess it wasn’t enough. Cue him having 3+ Group/Grade 1 winners next year.
He stood for $35,000 this year, up from $25,000 in 2021, when he covered 178 mares (which resulted in 105 live foals - 59%. Not great for a sire of his age but still a big crop either way). I wonder if his book dropped off in size this year.

I tried to find him a couple months ago when the report of mares bred came out. I couldn't find anything. The Florida leading sire list just says "Moved". He was supposed to stand at Pleasant Acres for 2022 but like you said, he didn't cover any mares. And he wasn't in their pdf flip stallion book thingy for 2022 that was on their site. He only covered 10-ish mares in 2021 though. I'm sure you looked already he does not have an export or death report either.

Just as an oddity, a 2yoc by Ride on Curlin named Sonoran, who finished a good second to his stablemate, the very fancied Faustin, at Santa Anita yesterday was a relatively eye-popping $230,000 OBS spring purchase this year--owned by Jill Baffert, trained by Bob. (Who also trains Faustin.) The colt must have had a spectacular breeze, a great physical, or both!
