Foals of 2016

Calves are similar at birth. Their legs can look pretty awkward at birth. We only had one we had to splint to correct, and that was because she was having trouble walking. Looks like it would fix on its own, but I am certainly no thoroughbred breeder.

eh, i posted something similar last year because i have never been around foals that small, and have heard all sorts of "i know a big name horse that had casts and pins and whatever as a foal because he was so crooked!!" stories (where horses were never named and there was no way to Yay or Nay the story), the stories + inexperience = i needed to learn more. i could probably still learn more, really.

As the horse matures and its chest widens, the legs tend to rotate inward somewhat, but. . . . JMHO.

Most vets will tell you not to even look at the legs for 30 days and then you can make a decision for periosteal stripping or something like that. We had one last year that was extremely knock kneed and toed out when born and with no interference is just mildly toes out in one front. Another was quite wind swept and is almost completely perfect as an early yearling. Many times, nature will do its thing.

Yeah, perfect foaling weather. Can't remember how many nasty, cold nights I spent in barns waiting for foals. Always wishing the mares could have waited just another day or two. Read somewhere mares try to delay foaling if the weather is bad. I never saw that happen.

It was -24*F here at the beginning of the week LOL. 24 degrees feels awfully nice to you after that
