The entire farm seems to truly have loved and appreciated MM. Steve Byk interviewed Josh Pons of Country Life today - I’m looking forward to listening to that...

WinStar has announced Laoban has died at age 8 "unexpectedly" with no COD mentioned yet.

That's a shock. Laoban had shown promise as a sire, and losing him so young must be hard on his handlers.
I would be interested to know what caused this sudden tragedy.

It is rather odd when they do not mention a cause of death, even surmise it is suspected to have been a heart attack, even though they can't confirm anything until after the necropsy. But if it happened in the paddock with no video or witnesses then maybe it is better to just wait for official report. However, if there never is reporting of the official necropsy report, like with Arrogate, then one starts to suspect there is a genetic component and it makes you go hmmm.

I doubt it was a heart attack. Winstar has no problems--usually--announcing the COD but in at least one article, Elliot Walden states that they will not be commenting further on his death. I find that very, very odd for an organization that is usually quite transparent.CorridorZ75 wrote: ↑Mon May 24, 2021 1:25 pm It is rather odd when they do not mention a cause of death, even surmise it is suspected to have been a heart attack, even though they can't confirm anything until after the necropsy. It's possible they "turned their back" as you say and then he just suddenly dropped dead. Maybe he colicked? That can happen very quickly and without warning.CorridorZ75 wrote: ↑Mon May 24, 2021 1:25 pm It is rather odd when they do not mention a cause of death, even surmise it is suspected to have been a heart attack, even though they can't confirm anything until after the necropsy. Usually the official number of mares bred comes out in October, but occasionally you might see a breeding report given in an interview article beforehand.
He will have 5 crops, counting the ones conceived in 2021.

Is it possible that an accident happened while breeding? It said this morning, when does WinStar open their breeding shed in the morning?

If I were a breeder who'd sent a mare to Laoban and I heard this news..I'd at least hope that if they suspected something genetic caused his death they'd be transparent with breeders at the very least on a cause of death so that breeders know to have any foals checked by a vet to identify and hopefully Treat early anything genetic that could effect the horse

Out of curiosity, what are the genetic disorders in TB that cause sudden death in apparently young and healthy horses? (that a mare owner would need to be aware of).TapitsGal wrote: ↑Mon May 24, 2021 5:08 pm If I were a breeder who'd sent a mare to Laoban and I heard this news..I'd at least hope that if they suspected something genetic caused his death they'd be transparent with breeders at the very least on a cause of death so that breeders know to have any foals checked by a vet to identify and hopefully Treat early anything genetic that could effect the horse

If it wasn't something obvious and sudden like an injury in the paddock or in his stall, I would guess something like aortic rupture. If they do find out after a necropsy, hopefully they'd announce it, but I'm not optimistic.
