Most of the Swedish stallions at stud this year, a nice mix. Really looking forward to what Swipe's offspring do as 3yos.

It was disappointing that White Soxs was injured and had to be retired, many looked forward to see him running.

I feel like his size was the biggest factor to him not being popular, combined with his unpopular pedigree. I don't think the soundness issues factor in though because so many with soundness issues cover 100+ mares every year elsewhere in the US.Northport wrote: ↑Thu Jan 07, 2021 11:23 amAt that point he will probably be worth less than his plane ticket, so of all the fan groups "trying" to buy a retired stallion, this seems like one of the more realistic ones... if they can pool something like $50,000 to get him back to America.
When he first retired they couldn't find a farm that wanted to stand him, so he's put back in training, then retired for good, then he's off to Korea after 3 very unproductive seasons in Maryland
2018/2019 - 14 foals from 25 covers - 56%
2019/2020 - 8 foals from 17 covers - 47%
He covered 13 mares in 2020
I'd be shocked if he was sold to Korea for anything close to $100,000. I'm kind of shocked that anyone anywhere would be interested in him as a stallion. No pedigree, soundness issues, and dodgy fertility. I guess the allure of his first crop turning two in 2021 leaves the chance that he could sire a superstar.
This isn't meant to be a roast of Dortmund, but just saying why I think it isn't all that unrealistic that common folk would be able to afford to bring him back in a couple years' time. 40-50k sounds like a lot of money, but in the horse racing world, heck even in the showjumping world, it's the bottom end of the market.
I'd be surprised if they paid more for the horse than the plane ticket cost, especially if he is having fertility issues. That was why Boundary was pensioned at 15. It kind of goes back to Paynter's share selling and how I thought the price was low. The average fan has no idea what failed or unpopular stallions sell for and the reality is, its not even a top stallions stud fee. I don't have a problem with farms selling on stallions that don't fit their programs either. But in cases like this, does he need to sire foals? Do a Go Fund Me for his pensioning or something, if they really needed the less than 50k he was probably sold for. I just don't see how sending a subfertile stallion to South Korea is going to end well for the horse. Especially when I had looked up the stallions that were confirmed to have been slaughtered this year and all of them had poor fertility or didn't cover mares at all.
Just saw that Bloodhorse put out an article and Kaleem Shah has already made arrangements with the current owner.
"I understand the concerns with South Korea," said Shah. "I have made sure that he can never be sold for slaughter or if at any time they cannot take care of him, I will get the horse back and give him a good life here, perhaps at a retirement farm."

Lanes End did a press event and said something about all their stallions, except 3, which is weird. Nothing about Honor Code, Mineshaft or Mr Speaker.

I looked at the FB page of Rosshill Farm and I saw something that intrigued me. For two of their stallions, they charge not for the foal in general, but they charge based on the gender of the foal.
So if you breed to their stallion and you get a colt, you pay X amount, and if you get a filly, it's X (cheaper) amount.
I've never seen this before. Also in my experience females are more expensive than males (at least when it comes to other animals, namely puppies).

Up until 5 years ago, no one in National Hunt racing wanted mares. They’ve added some incentives and mares hurdle and chase races at Cheltenham and on the English and Irish pattern calendar, so it’s a bit better now. But almost everyone wanted (or still wants) geldings, and there wasnt any financial benefit to racing a filly.Mylute wrote: ↑Fri Jan 08, 2021 2:04 pm I looked at the FB page of Rosshill Farm and I saw something that intrigued me. I noticed this, too. Honor Code and Mr. Speaker both had a 3yo win a Grade 1 in 2020 (Honor AP, their new stallion; and Speech), and then Mineshaft literally just had Senor Buscador win a stakes race. I get that they all three had pretty lackluster years all other things considered. But I have a hard time imagining them sending off any of their stallions right now, so I'm not too concerned; just curious.Flanders wrote: ↑Fri Jan 08, 2021 12:53 am Lanes End did a press event and said something about all their stallions, except 3, which is weird. Wonder if test breeding showed him shoot blanks, or if old age was ailing him.Mylute wrote: ↑Fri Jan 08, 2021 4:14 pm Lemon Drop Kid pensioned.

Hmm, my friend said she did read about HC, that it was edited, that this piece only includes stallions where interviews were done. If so, it’s telling if they couldn’t find anyone to say anything nice about HC offspring. Surprising about Mineshaft, though.KatieK101 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 08, 2021 4:09 pmI noticed this, too. Uh well, he's 25, so either way, it's a well-deserved retirement. I loved him while he was racing, so I'm glad he became such a good sire (and broodmare sire!).FlyToTheStars wrote: ↑Fri Jan 08, 2021 4:32 pmWonder if test breeding showed him shoot blanks, or if old age was ailing him.Mylute wrote: ↑Fri Jan 08, 2021 4:14 pm Lemon Drop Kid pensioned.

I love Lemon Drop Kid. I used to run his unofficial fan club back in the day, right after he won the Futurity. And I always knew he'd come through in Belmont.
I may be biased, but I always thought he was underrated as a stallion. They say Belmont winners don't make the best sires but he was more than useful and got a number of good horses on both dirt and turf. And some of his daughters have turned out to be very good producers too.
