breaks my heart about Awesome Again - this old guy deserved to stay at the home he knew for so many years - not to mention the warmer weather in FL as opposed to KY this time of year - i am so sad for this horse - not sure what they will say is the cause of his death - but to me, i think its a broken heart - i don't know diddly about horses.... but common sense and empathy would tell you at his age, to let him stay with the people he knew, the place he knew - i blame stronach - just a really stupid, tragic decision to move this animal - i am so sorry for awesome again.... deserved so much better in the end.

Now poor Tapizar euthanized after stall accident while in quarantine awaiting shipping to Japan. Very sad. I wonder what happened? He was not in his regular stall.

Southern Phantom retired to stand as a stallion in VA. I guess owners want to recoup their investment but do we really need another racing failure as a stallion? I would have much rather have seen him gelded and retrained as a riding horse in a good home.

Virginia only has a handful of stallions...the busiest being Friend or Foe at 17 mares in 2020 if I remember correctly....and I can't recall any of the rest getting more than a handful of mares (less than five).
Southern Phantom will do less damage to the thoroughbred gene pool than Spendthrift's 'Share the Upside' stallions cranking out 500 foals to suspect stallion prospects every year.

For real. Just take a look at the two godawful sons of Into Mischief recently pictured in the stallion conformation thread-- Instagrand and Maximus Mischief. Southern Phantom will probably put out 25 foals a year and 23 of them will most likely go straight to the show ring.

Awesome Again was always in KY, not FL. I wish they hadn't relocated him to OF at his age, but the weather was no factor.

mariasmon.... thanks for that update - i made a poor assumption - i am an idiot - i did not realize he was in KY already - so thank you for letting me know - - sadly yes, i still think it was the wrong move - maybe they had good intentions - but from AA's point of view, maybe he didn't want to get a new home at 26.

Agreed. Va has a huge sport horse population including fox hunting show jumping etc etc. I’m going to toddle on over to have a viewing at some point! He’s pretty much in my backyard and this is my repro vet!

Actual ad from Coolmore. Water, hay, oats, and fresh air... sure.

Why put that in an ad... ever... unless you are trying to prove something?
What a stupid ad.

Also. Define “great” horse. Because it’s slightly over-used, especially by the White Wizard.

The ad is definitely stupid but I believe they are trying to say, he showed he could race on hay, oats and water and still be competitive once he switched trainers. And of course they want breeders to use him, so they are trying to downplay everything else.

But I understand connections calling horses great. If I owned racehorses and had any even win a stakes, let alone a graded stakes, I would think they are great. I think the difference is All-time great, which is something I don't see thrown around a lot.

One of my friends brought up a good point about that ad. It was more likely the owners that were involved coming up with that advertisement, and not necessarily Coolmore themselves. No matter who drummed it up, it is still cringe worthy.
I wanna do bad things with you.

In this article Mara says that Coolmore bought Eight Rings as a stallion, but I wonder if they intend to race him next year because he isn't on their stallion list.
"That should be a great race," Mara said about the Malibu. "From the yearlings Starlight bought into in 2018, we had Eight Rings, who was sold as a stallion (to Ashford Stud) and we got a nice chunk of change for him, as well as Authentic. We also have Charlatan (who has a stud deal with Hill 'n' Dale) who is still going and we have some nice kickers in the stallion deal if he can win a grade 1 stakes."

Yes, sending to Baffert really proved he was a good horse is his own right, especially since there has never been a whiff of controversy around Baffert. More to the point though, is Baffert made sure he re-directed any of his other horses that might beat until after he had secured the Gr 1 win.
