Symboli Kris S(USA), 1999H. Kris S(USA) x Tee Kay(USA) by Gold Meridian(USA), died of laminitis at Symboli Bokujo where he had been pensioned on Dec 8th 2020.

May he rest in peace.

St Leger winnerGalileo Chrome has been retired and will stand as a National Hunt stallion
https://www.racingpost.com/bloodstock/s ... tud/462675
No mention of whether or not he was injured... but I kind of hope so? Or else it is a startling bad sign of the times in Europe. It's one thing to send sprinter/miler stallions off to stud at 4, but if they saw more value in him as a National Hunt stallion than as a middle distance older horse... yikes. It's also a bit alarming for his sire, Australia.
I guess we can look forward to him covering 250-300 mares for $5,000.

Interesting that King Kamehameha appears to be the stronger sire of sire influences than Deep Impact.

But the fact remains that King Kamehameha is a very influential sire of sires, represented by such top stallions as Lord Kanaloa, Rulership, Duramente and so on.
He is also likely to become the leading broodmare sire in Japan this year beating Sunday Silence.
Like Sunday Silence, King Kamehameha is quite a versatile sire of sires who can cover turf or dirt, from sprint to long distances, which distinguishes himself from other sires of sires in Japan now.
As for Deep Impact, it will be interesting to see what Contrail will do at stud in a few years.

We all know that those stallions didn't really have any chance in Kentucky, plus their fees were insane, but with Calumet seeming to be selling a lot of mares, yearlings, and weanlings without reserve, plus (looking to) unload all these stallions at public auction... I'm hoping they're focusing more on quality than quantity (though the sale of Paladin Bay baffles me), but it looks like some major downsizing.
They've had 507 starters this year, but with Covid it's hard to compare any stats to 2019 (655 starters) or 2018 (599).
They've had over 3,000 starts since 2013... and 13 graded stakes wins. I know not every operation can be Winstar, China Horse Club, Sol Kumin, etc. but they aren't exactly a blue collar operation either.

It’s a big cull. I suspect they’ve had a reality check or two in the last year or so, with Paynter not doing well at stud and Bal A Bali having such dreadful sales figures. They don’t seem to have any mare quality control and their stud fees are wildly out of line with reality, which makes this situation unsurprising.Northport wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 10:36 pm We all know that those stallions didn't really have any chance in Kentucky, plus their fees were insane, but with Calumet seeming to be selling a lot of mares, yearlings, and weanlings without reserve, plus (looking to) unload all these stallions at public auction... It really underscores just how good (and underappreciated) English Channel is, and how well Real Solution is doing with the very limited opportunities he’s received.

I hope this isn't as disjointed as it probably is. I'm very tired and have tried to fix this post like 10 times.
Paynter is a Winstar stallion. I'm guessing you meant Oxbow since they have pretty much identical pedigrees.
As for English Channel he didn't move to Calumet until the 2015 breeding season so I would give a lot of his success to the management of Hurricane Hall and Lane's End where he stood previous. I just don't know how well he has done since moving to Calumet. Its kind of hard to judge since the majority of his foals get better with age/distance and the oldest crop he sired since he moved to Calumet is 4. But comparing the numbers doesn't look good right now. He had 8.9% Stakes winners and 58.8% winners to foals in the Hurricane Hall/Lane's End crops and 3.8% stakes winners and 40.1% winners to foals in the Calumet crops (not counting 2yos). Maybe he will prove me wrong and his Calumet crops will start doing good once they hit 5yos+, I hope they do.
I feel they have to have a MASSIVE broodmare band to just have mares to breed to all their stallions. So yeah the quality isn't great on a lot of them and with their intentions to rehome or whatever all those stallions, maybe that is why they are culling the broodmare band down a lot. Probably also the poorer quality weanlings and yearlings.
The thing is, while the horses (yearlings in 2019, and weanlings, yearlings, mares in 2020), that they have sold have almost all sold for atrociously low amounts, they have to be doing something right or they are just churning out an absolute mountain of horses each year. They are on track to win the title for Leading Breeder by money earned for the 2nd year in a row and their win and WPS %s are pretty much average/low average of the other breeders in the top 10. The difference is, their produced foals have made 2,440 starts in 2020. The next closet breeder with starts is WinStar with 1,072, with only one other having more than 1k starts.

I think Calumet's massive broodmare band has reduced in size significantly in the last two years. Comparing mares bred (2018 to 2020) Keen Ice went from 176 to 49, Bal A Bali from 125 to 22, Oxbow 78 to 15, Big Blue Kitten 68 to 10, Mr Z. 61 to 15, War Correspondent 53 to 21, Optimizer 28 to 11. Ransom The Moon debuted in 2019 and went from 118 to 44. Plus all the stallions listed for sale were still getting mares two years ago and covered none this year.Flanders wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 9:16 pm I hope this isn't as disjointed as it probably is. For several years, they loaded up on cheap mares at sales along with some older quality mares near the end of their breeding cycle. Lots have since been sold cheaply at auctions in foal to Calumet stallions and one would guess the older quality mares have ended their breeding days. It certainly was a quantity over quality approach.
Nevertheless, the owner is worth over a billion dollars...certainly old guys like Grey Swallow and Musketier could (and hopefully still will) end their days at Old Friends or some other soft landing. There was enough grumbling in social media and elsewhere....I would assume Calumet Farm reacted.

At auction, 2020 was the first year they sold broodmares listed under Calumet Farm, maybe they had in the past with a sales agent. I mean here if a good example of why would they breed this mare? Is it because of her female family? Because clubbed foot can be genetic.hadrianmarcus wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 1:19 amI think Calumet's massive broodmare band has reduced in size significantly in the last two years. Her dam is a full sister to Quiet Dance, who I would argue is one of the top broodmares of the century so far. Her dam is also a full sister to a G2 producer and half to another G1 producer. I don't really agree with breeding mares with faults as severe as hers are, but this is a HUGE family, so I could see the temptation.Flanders wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 7:11 pm I mean here if a good example of why would they breed this mare?
