Qatar Racing is pretty fast on retiring their colts.

I've looked a couple times but haven't seen if its been announced where Siskin is going. Have you seen anything? It was a big secret when his breeding rights were sold, which is always weird to me.

Yeah, Qatar Racing is an operation that says they want to be commercial and self sufficient when they retire their stallions after they get a G1 win (took Lightning Spear forever to get that done), then they go and spend 3,500,000 guineas on a horse like Darain at Tattersalls October. It just seems like for a Middle Eastern royal family, they pick and choose when they want to seem frugal.

I was thinking about Siskin the other day, because it really seems like he's disappeared after a poor run in the Moulin, which sucks since he seemed to have the world at his feet in June. I still have no clue who bought the breeding rights to him and really can't believe nothing has leaked about it. I hope he'll at least be around in 2021 to get some redemption.

Can you tell that I'm just really annoyed in general about the state of three year old milers of 2020? With the exception of Palace Pier. Don't get me started on the handling of Pinatubo.

I guess they’re pretty keen to get a son of KJ to replace Roaring Lion. It’s a real shame because he was really asked to dance all distances despite a mile being his best trip. That said...he might still have a chance a Champion 3 yo if he does well at BC.
Honestly, the three year old colts have been abysmal this year. Pinatubo cried out for a quick mile to 7f. Pyledriver ran everything from 10 to 14f. Siskin disappeared almost as soon as his unbeaten record. Even Palace Pier has only managed two G1s. No champion 3 yo this year?

I totally understand the sentimental factor in why it is important for them to fill the void that Roaring Lion left, but from a commercial breeding perspective, are European breeders clamouring for sons of Kitten's Joy? Roaring Lion was a champion, Kameko... is not, though his female family is more Euro-centric than Roaring Lion's was - though both are good.

Disappointing decision after what, so far, has been a disappointing season for Kameko, in my opinion. They call his 3 year old season "record breaking".... record for best horse to finish 4th 3 times in a row over 3 different distances? I know that connections needed to see if he would stay a mile and a half and a mile and a quarter, which he doesn't, but he's only won a G1 and G2 this year. I think they spent a lot of 2020 figuring out a lot about him, and now that they know his conditions, they could really light up the miler division next year.

Hopefully he runs well at Keeneland, though he doesn't like soft conditions, which is why he scratched from the QEII at Ascot this week, and it seems more than likely that they won't be getting firm ground in Kentucky in November.

I didn't think of it earlier until I read another article but the reason they call his 3yo season "record breaking" is because he set a new stakes record in the 2000 Guineas. So technically he is a record breaker but to call his whole season record breaking is kind of reaching.

Not really news but I found an article from June that said they think Siskin is going to an unnamed farm in Ireland when he goes to stud.

Just listened to Nick Luck’s interview with Qatar Racing’s David Redvers. He said the main reason they are retiring Kameko is because they have a broodmare band of over 100 mares, many of which were destined for Roaring Lion. While they have Zoustar, Lightning Spear, etc, they need a standout stallion to send their best mares to in order to save them the millions in would cost to send mares to Dubawi, Kingman, Frankel, etc. So it’s a commercial decision, but not really the one I thought it was.

Either way, I still kind of bristle when I hear middle Eastern royalty saying they need to save money on their over hundred broodmares.

I'm not a fan of the practice either but that's what you get in regional markets sometimes, unraced or not great racing full brothers to better horses. I can't imagine he'll get many mares, especially at $2,000 stud fee. There are horses that actually are GSWs for the same price in California.

And while I'm not a fan of this particular horse entering stud given his relative lack of talent, history does show full siblings outshining the better performing sibling at stud.

Years ago, Viceregal and Vice Regent were great examples of that.

Viceregal went 8 for 9, and was champion 2 yr old and HOTY in Canada. He'd been exported to Japan by the time he was 12.

His lesser full brother, Vice Regent won only only won 2 of 5 starts, but as a bigger fish in a smaller pond, he ended up 13x leading sire in Canada, vastly outshining his brother at stud.

Runaway Ghost (Ghostzapper) has been retired to stand at Double L L Farms in New Mexico.

Runaway Ghost won the G3 Sunland Derby and 5 other stakes out west. He was at least SP from age 2 to 5. His dam is Rose's Desert, a champion in New Mexico.

If Faversham was physically impressive, I'd agree. But he's really quite scrawny, or was when we saw him.

Laoban has relocated to WinStar for stud...I hope this works out for him. I'd hate to see him be the next one they ship off overseas
