Ridan_Remembered wrote:For those who are interested, DRF posted two new photos of Songbird in her paddock at Timber Town Stable, where owner Mandy Pope boards her broodmare band. Songbird was wearing front wraps. She was turned out with Welcoming, a beautiful daughter of Tapit out of Stormy Welcome by Storm Cat. Stormy Welcome's maternal granddam is the famous daughter of Secretariat named Weekend Surprise, dam of A. P. Indy, Summer Squall and five other graded stakes horses. Indy, of course, sired Pulpit, sire of Tapit. Welcoming has three crosses of Secretariat through his daughters Terlingua and Weekend Surprise.

@Serenassong, the great Sunday Silence was considered to not be correct in the stifle and front legs, but look what he accomplished after being rejected by some of the most savvy horsemen and women in North America. There is an article on Bloodhorse.com about the Ben Walden Jr. dispersal (https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing ... -walden-jr). In it, Mr. Walden said, "My interest over the years has been pedigrees, and in some ways the business has passed me by. There is such a profound focus on the individual today. If you stand in the winner's circle at Saratoga you will see the emphasis on physicality, and I'm still a pedigree guy. Sometimes when you reach for those deep families you have to sacrifice on the physical side and that's worked against me a little bit over the last five or six years. Everybody wants that beautiful individual, and they don't care so much about pedigree."

I think failure to appreciate the importance of pedigrees is a profound mistake. For example, I love Songbird a lot, but if I was able to purchase one of the two mares shown in the linked DRF piece, I would take Welcoming because of her incredible bottom line and broodmare's pedigree.
I actually read this when it came out- I agree with him. I appreciate a good looking horse as much as the next person, but the blood speaks the loudest as far as im concerned. In this day of precocity, breeding for the sales- the fine art of developing and sustaining a great family has taken a back seat. It takes a long time, an we live in a now-now-now world.

Timber Town Stable is at Timber Town Stable.
7 hrs · Lexington, KY ·
Perhaps the most well-known of all the mares in her power-packed paddock is Havre de Grace. The Saint Liam mare started 16 times, winning 9 of those and only finishing out of the money once while amassing nearly 2.6 million dollars in earnings. Her 2010 season was highlighted by an exciting 4-race rivalry with the great Blind Luck, races in which the two usually finished a nose or a neck apart.
In 2011, she famously won the Woodward Stakes, beating the likes of Flat Out and Mission Impazible before capping her Horse of the Year season with a spectacular 8-length win over Royal Delta in the Beldame. This tenacious competitor enjoys the quiet life now, grazing her days away with Queenie's Song and fellow Whisper Hill mares Plum Pretty and Groupie Doll. She is expecting a Tapit foal in 2018.

Nice to see her with a spring in her step! Now that Black Tide has produced Kitasan Black, Wind in Her Hair is even more of a legend!

Old girl was feeling really good, lol. The sheer joy that horses can demonstrate sometimes just fills my heart.

Exactly!
One may say that Wind in Her Hair is the best partner Sunday Silence ever met, too. :D

The Breeders’ Cup heroine whose influence is felt all over the world

Desert Stormer, who won the 1995 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at 30/1, has had enormous success as a broodmare. Photo: Emily Shields
Kent Desormeaux crouched low over the Desert Stormer’s withers, urging her on through the mud. A G3-winning mare in a field of colts, Desert Stormer had no business being on the lead in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. With Mr. Greeley on her flank, she dug in deeper, repelling his challenge and splashing across the Belmont Park wire. She upset the 1995 Sprint - only her fourth stakes win - paying $31 to win.

That was 22 years ago. Now, Desert Stormer is 28 and living out her days in a pasture at Dell Ridge Farm in Lexington. She is oblivious to the fact that her daughters have gone on to be both successful racemares and producers all over the world. Instead she is simply a horse, sharing a field with three other pensioned mares. She is lovingly cared for, but is a long way from where she started.

I was just flipping through my copy of the Bloodhorse Breeders Cup edition. She ran tough in that race, so much heart! I love reading about the old girls!

This was posted in the 'In Memoriam 2018' thread' - Dreaming of Anna, champion 2-year-old filly of 2006, died January 9 of a ruptured aorta. She was only 14.

It was originally reported in the DRF.

An updated article is on page 7 of the Bloodhorse Daily PDF

Beholder confirmed to be in foal to Uncle Mo

carole

Beholder should be getting close to foaling her Uncle Mo colt. Not today or tomorrow, but pretty soon.

I believe Spendthrift is revamping Beholder's website with a blog that will keep fans updated with how she and baby B are doing.

Love The Chase is currently expecting a foal by Pioneerof The Nile and is going to Uncle Mo. She has a yearling half-brother by Tapit to California Chrome.

https://www.racingpost.com/bloodstock/b ... -mo/316486

Her 3-year-old son and full brother to Chrome, Faversham, is being pointed to the California Cup Derby on Feb. 19. Her two fillies are now broodmares.
