Flanders wrote: Thu Aug 20, 2020 10:12 pm I'm sure there are various reasons, one being Scat Daddy but I think the big one is, it all comes down to what they paid for Justify. He cost 75 million, of course they are going to try and hype the crap out of him. They want to get as much money before the verdict comes in when his foals hit the racetrack. If they can make him as a stallion, he will never have the limited book because of when he was born and he can earn them a ton of money. They've failed on these huge purchases before in the US. Cigar was infertile and more a huge failure for the insurance company. Fusaichi Pegasus never did much but I feel they never moved him on, maybe because he cost so much, maybe the syndicate felt they should just keep him because of the price, maybe because it would be admitting a huge failure, maybe because he had a clause that said he couldn't be sold.
Their whole business model is based on recouping the investment in the first three years before the first crop hits the track. That is why the huge crops and the double seasons. However, in modern day, the proof is in the sales ring rather than the track. If the weanlings or the first yearlings don't look the part, these ridiculously high intro stud fees start to leave the breeders looking a bit naked financially. Coolmore has a bit of a failsafe in that they throw crazy money to financially support their big stallions by buying a ton in the first year or two to push the big averages they then advertise on. Really it is all just a shell game to entertain supremely wealthy people.
Yeah I know but when they are trying to get people to breed to a new stallion at that stud fee they are going to have to go all in. If he isn't bringing enough mares in, they have to up their game or they will not recoup that 75 million. So its more than likely he wasn't bringing in the amount of mares they want.

On Justify it is interesting to note that up to last night he had 3 foals reported on the Australian studbook, the first being born late July, nowhere on any social media page that I can find has a Australian Justify foal been mentioned (up until this morning when a champion mare passed away giving birth to one)
Ask me any questions you have about New Zealand and Australia racing

The discussion on the Coolmore Austrailia stallion parade reminded me of the 2018 Darley Stallion parade. Dubawi knows he's the man. :D

2020 HBA Selection Sale went amazingly well yesterday! :D
The gross, average and median price were the new record for its entire history!
The sale topper was a colt by the freshman sire Duramente(JPN)(King Kamehameha).

https://www.racingpost.com/news/latest/ ... ess/444713

It's kind of wild how much Shadwell has spent at sales in the last 10 years, and how many horses they have in training between dozens of trainers in England, Ireland, France, America, South Africa, Australia, and the UAE, but until this year, they didn't really win more than one or two G1s a year.

Taghrooda won the Oaks and King George in 2014, Mukhadram won the Eclipse in 2014, Muharrar won 4 G1s in 2015, plus Tamarkuz winning the Dirt Mile in 2015, Awtaad won the Irish 2,000 Guineas in 2016, Hawwaam won 5 G1s in South Africa in 2019/2020, then of course we have Battaash, Nazeef, Tawkeel, Mohaather, lighting it up currently.... but still, the money they put in (until this year) doesn't seem to transfer to results, let alone top stallion prospects, in England or the States.

Muhaarar has all the credentials to be a star stallion, and his first crop is three this year, but he isn't doing too hot. When they ventured out to stand a non-Shadwell raced stallion in Poet's Word, he only stood there for one season before being transferred to NH.

At KEESEPT19, Shadwell was the second-leading buyer, behind Godolphin. Shadwell paid $11,070,000 for 18 yearlings, including three for seven figures: a colt and a filly both by Curlin for $1,050,000 each and a $1 million filly by War Front. At KEESEPT17, Shadwell ranked as leading buyer with 17 horses acquired for a total of $12.475 million from books 1 and 2. I think they were also the leading buyer at KEESEPT16.

Is it management? Bad luck? I'd be interested to hear anyone's opinion. Not too long ago we were talking about how Godolphin was a shadow of what it used to be, but Charlie Appleby has pretty much resurrected the organization, or maybe it also has to do with the resignation of Simon Crisford and John Ferguson. I'm not sure how much Saeed Bin Suroor complaining to media outlets about his horses or the chain of command has helped his side of the business, though. I can't believe he still has a job there.
Well... his latest rising star, Mohaather, has just been retired due to "significant bone bruising to his near-hind fetlock.”

Will he be the next Green Desert? Survey says... probably not. But we'll see!

~ Hoppertunity, Uncle Lino, Peace and Justice, and Medallist will be moving to Maryland. Seems like a big loss to PA since Hopper was so popular.
This is the update on the story, I'm assuming the stallions are still moving but it doesn't say anything.

Results of HBA Selection Sale are now up on JBIS.

HBA Selection Sale (August 24th) and Summer Sale (August 25th - 28th) are the highlights of the 95% (approximately....haha!) breeders in Japan.

In the Summer Sale Day 1 (yesterday), a colt by Makfi(GB)[o/o Madrigal Score(JPN) by Dance in the Dark(JPN)] was sold for ¥25 million, becoming the highest-priced horse in history bred by high school students. Shizunai Agricultural High School is the only public high school that breeds thoroughbreds. :D

Will this turn breeders off bolt knowing his half brother got shipped overseas? And it's good to see that Drosselmeyer(who I think sired a good one in jolie olimpica and was another "WinStar castoff" ) seems to be doing really successful at stud in his new country of Brazil being a leading sire

I'm not sure why it would. Bolt won G1 races, while Sonic Mule did not. He is going to stand in an appropriate place. Bolt is standing in an appropriate place for his accomplishments.

Nope. It wouldn't even be on a breeders radar. Nearly every stallion out there probably has a half brother overseas or in some regional market.

I'd say the bigger concern would be the fact that Bolt D'oro has some pretty violent mental/temperamental issues.

Though tbh breeders don't really seem to care about that much either.
