This might be a dumb question but does a foal only get its nutrition from the mother or will it also eat hay?

For the first couple weeks, the foals are mostly just copying their dams and picking up the hay (or grass) and carrying it around. They don't eat enough to get any nutrition from it. By a month old, they are grazing very briefly. I'm guessing that it takes at least 2 months before hay/grass really adds anything to their diets. The dam is the chief source of nutrition for about the first three months.

They seem like they'd enjoy a bit of sweet feed if their moms didn't eat every morsel :)

Actually they were turned out today for a bit, apparently. The blog post had a cute vid clip up of them enjoying a small covered arena, with them both in high spirits. It's hard to hear the audio (some wind?) but you can hear that the filly "vetted out perfectly." 127 lbs, 42 inches of cuteness and sass.

Thanks Sparrow. Somehow I forgot that stunning photo of Treve nuzzling her baby.

@Tachyon, the photo of Jeweler and her foal is also so wonderful.

@Lurkey, the La Verdad filly is really pretty and the video is cute. Good idea putting them in a covered area the first time the filly is out -- in 27 degree weather no less. Brrrr...

Photos and videos like these calm the soul after a hectic work week.

La Verdad '18 is really curious about everything around her including what mom's eating

La Verdad and her Tapit filly...born without incident despite the crowd in her stall. Filly looks like she might turn gray.

Posting this unusual foal for fun and as a way to link to BaroqueAgain1's important thread about DSLD (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6093). This is a half Thoroughbred mule foal (male) sired by a show donkey named Clyde's Gallant Fox out of a Thoroughbred mare named Shemariah. Here's a link to her pedigree: http://www.pedigreequery.com/shemariah

The mare is owned by the University of California at Davis, which bred the foal. UC Davis is one of the world's leading equine health and medicine research and academic facilities.

Two time Horse of the Year CALIFORNIA CHROME has a new 1/2 brother at Atlas Farm. 12 hours old, he’s pure class, which is par for the course with PIONEER OF THE NILE, a beautiful two turn bay, oozing quality head to toe. Love The Chase & her POTN are both doing great #BornLucky

Oh my goodness, that picture with the baby and foal defines cute. The foal is gorgeous, and I'm glad Love The Chase is getting a chance with some of the elite sires. Looking forward to seeing what her Tapit colt does next year. Chrome's own first foals are a good looking bunch, at least the ones are whose pictures have been made public.

An exciting #FoalFriday... this handsome colt is a half-brother to the great Enable, being by Sea The Stars out of Concentric, and was born at 9.05pm on 1st March. The dam will be going back to Enable's sire Nathaniel this year #FoalWatch

G1 placed in the Cheveley park stakes, Pursuit of glory just foaled a healthy Constitution filly at Atlas Farm. Her 2nd dam Sophisticat won the G1 Coronation S. 3rd dam was Serena’s Song. Mare visits Flintshire this spring #SF
