What do the Japanese Thoroughbreds Bless Journey, Satono Crown and Yamakatsu Ace have in common? Answer: they are the only runners in Sunday’s 16-strong Arima Kinen - the biggest betting race in the world - that are not grandchildren of Sunday Silence.
Sunday Silence has been either the sire or grandsire of 12 of the last 13 runnings of the Nakayama showpiece. He was the sire of every winner from 2004 to 2007 (Zenno Rob Roy, Heart’s Cry, Deep Impact and Matsurida Gogh). His sons Agnes Tachyon (Daiwa Scarlet, 2008), Stay Gold (Dream Journey 2009, Orfevre 2011 and 2013, Gold Ship 2012), Neo Universe (Victoire Pisa 2010) and Deep Impact (Gentildonna 2014 and Satono Diamond 2016) have been responsible for all the winners since, apart from Gold Actor in 2015.

There’s a pretty strong chance Sunday’s renewal will continue that sequence, with 13 of the 16 runners descending from the son of Halo.

The impact of Sunday Silence is truly amazing and wonderful, especially in light of the fact that he was not welcome here in the country of his birth. Shows that even the most deeply knowledgeable breeders and bloodstock advisors can be super wrong sometimes. I have the comfort of memories watching him race in California, and only wish that he had not suffered the laminitis that took his life too soon.

Tachyon, thank you so very much for posting these links. The last day or two I have been exploring the Shadai website. Magnificent. The photos of Sunday are wonderful and a little bittersweet, because he was such a presence, but died too young. But oh what a legacy he has left behind for us to enjoy.

I hate laminitis with a passion because it took the lives of too many horses I dearly loved, Secretariat being top of that list. So I'm comforted by the fact that there have been real strides made in treating the disease, as the cases of Paynter and Lady Eli demonstrated.

Circling back to Shadai for a moment, they have one heck of an impressive roster of stallions headed by Deep Impact. Orfevre is my favorite only because I have always loved beautiful chestnuts, and my goodness is he ever gorgeous. I think he's even better looking now as a filled out stallion.

He's the complete package, with speed, stamina, incredible physical beauty and apparently a nice temperament. He's everything I can imagine wanting in a stallion.
I've watched him race for a couple of years now, and I've never seen him act up. No antics in the parade ring or rearing/kicking at the gate. He shows energy, but seems to keep it pretty contained.
I can't wait until his first runners hit the track in a few years. :D

I watched the race (what a treat to have Japanese racing on a Wednesday night!) and Time Flyer looked good. I was also impressed by the Kitten's Joy colt, Gendarme, who looks to have a bright future as well.

I wonder if Lucas should have stayed withdrawn as he was initially after his unspecified-but-minor training "incident"... worried about Trine, too, hoping that was just easing and not injury.

Stay Foolish impressed me the most, he's one to watch definitely. 8-)

Time Flyer is a very pretty boy, though.

Like many Northern Dancer descendants have a very definite Northern Dancer type, there seems to be a Sunday Silence type in Japan. I like it.

Have none of these made their way back to the US?

Silent Name and Hat Trick, both by Sunday Silence, have stood or are standing in North America. Silent Name is at Adena Springs in Ontario, but I'm having a hard time finding out where Hat Trick is ATM.

ETA: Hat Trick is standing in Brazil for 2018.
https://www.bloodhorse.com/stallion-reg ... -trick-jpn
Not much info there. :(
This stallion has really had his passport stamped a lot. It seems he started in Japan, then stood in Kentucky, shuttled to Australia, then Argentina, now Brazil. I don't know if he was returning to the US after all the shuttling. :?

Nice photos. Very enjoyable. Kitasan Black has so much presence. I think he will fill out into a gorgeous stallion. And, from the photo of Copano Rickey's last race, he seems to have a low-headed running style that is reminiscent of A. P. Indy's way of going even though Rickey is not related to Indy.
